⇜ That's me!

Hello!

MAKING AWESOME PRESENTATIONS

Kamila Součková

...cannot be taught.

But here is what I've noticed over the long years...

You are not making a presentation in order to

make a presentation.

You are making a presentation to help you

tell things to your audience.

You have worked hard. This is your chance to show off.

Use it!

Show some enthusiasm :-P

STORY

Don't just list facts.

Have a reason for saying the things you say.

ENGAGE

the audience.

FLOW

It's not just a collection of slide-sized rectangles.

You should know why they are ordered like this.

Good structure  smooth presentation  happier audience.

Tip: top-down approach: sections ⇢ slides ⇢ content

Recap the story. Not just "we did this" -- how & why.

Tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you've told them.

THESIS,

ARGUMENTS,

CONCLUSION

Your awesome stuff.

State your understanding of the task. Define goals.

VISUAL

Do things for a purpose.

Convey meaning!

KEEP IT SIMPLE

The content is what matters. Not your PowerPoint skills ;-)

Tips:

  • use a good template
  • a few font sizes & colors, at most 2 fonts
  • white slide background (@pictures)

DETAILS

Review what it looks like. Then review it again. Make someone else review it. Then come back after a week and review it again.

Your audience may be unable to tell the difference, but they sure can feel it.

ANIMATION

Again:

Do things for a purpose.

Convey meaning!

possibly good uses:

  1. sequentially revealing content
  2. highlighting parts of the slide
  3. motion (meaning sequential transformation)

Don't overdo it!

PRESENTING

  • timing!!!
    • ~ 1m for conclusion
  • meaningful pauses
  • neat transitions
  • know what is coming on the next slide
  • show enthusiasm!

Practice makes perfect.

READY TO SHOW?

Projectors suck.

  • contrast (esp. images/videos)
  • font size (esp. graph labels)
  • ideally find a projector and test it

You are not making a presentation in order to

make a presentation.

You are making a presentation to help you

tell things to your audience.

Have fun!

Thank you for your attention.
