You & Me

Disclosure

We choose our song mainly because with love the fast tempo of the song. We thought we could play our video using fast cuts, in unison with the song.

We also love how the lyrics makes it out like everything is so irrelevant to the characters. Just focusing on now and then, its so free and individual.

We also thought about what kind of audience we were trying to connect with. The song is young and what young people think about; love, friendship and unity. The lyrics also go with our storyline.

Why we choose the song?

Outline of our video

Three childhood friends, who have grown up to have different characteristics. Two friends who portray societies views of youth, being rebellious, looking for immediate gratification. But the third friend is more of her own person, and doesn't act out. She represents what the media don't show about the youth.

Our video is mainly shot in POV of the Hero like character, the audience will see everything from her perspective.

We have decided to show a build up of events, where the 2 villain characters are being bad influences and conforming to the stigma that young people are hot headed and reckless. We took this from Propp's theory.

In our video we will have a group of young people wearing all black with mask, making them look like a collective all look the same. Showing no individuality. Then they will take off the black clothes and mask dressed as themselves, we want to show that the media only shows one side of young people, we aren't the same and we never will be. We have our own voices, styles and views of society.

Target audience

Our media product is aimed at people/ both sexes from the age of 16 to 25, usually students and graduates who have significant disposable income and time rich

According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, our target audience would be  the explorer, the aspirer and the mainstream

According to the NRS social grade, they would be typically be in the C2 skilled working class and manual working section. However, there are some are in the 'D' section which is- working class, semi and unskilled manual workers

Some may not have a great amount of disposable income and may live off their parents' money

Typically white however, there are some other ethnic groups and are more likely to be British and loves to party at places such as Camden and Shoreditch

Audience research

The target audience for our music product value having fun and enjoying themselves. They like to live in the moment

They also value independent thinking and counterculture

Our target audience would usually go to the club or go to party at least one a week, however, some are well educated

They quest security- tend to be domestic, conformist, conventional, sentimental. They favour value for money, family and brands

Our target audience arguably strive for status and are materialistic, acquisitive, orientated to image and appearance, persona and fashion.

They appreciate creativity and individualism

On the blog we have interviews with our target audience.

Explanation of narrative and storyline

Our video non-linear.

At the beginning of our music video it will start off with all three characters meeting at Liverpool Street, we have decided to use the idea of a split .Here we are attempting to repair the disruption.

The rewinds to the beginning, while this happening we will show the title of the son 'YOU' '&' 'ME'.  Then it leads to shots of young children in a park, we have decided to do this in Haggerston Park, this is our equilibrium.

The distribution is when the 2 characters decided they want to rob a shop, as they are young and don't have income and only think about immediate gratification.

Characters and casting decisions

We have decided to have three main characters. We will also have three younger versions of them. As well as the group in the mask.  We want to focus on the three characters as we don't want to over complicate the story. We feel the three characters will be relatiable. And only having a small cast you will see the strong bond between them . The young characters just represent them being together for a long time. The group wearing the mask shows our subliminal message to the audience. We will also have some candid shots of people, but it won't focus on them, they are just there to show mainly just to show unity or friendship.

Props/Costume

In our video we will have a group of young people wearing all black with mask, making them look like a collective all look the same.. Then they will take off the black clothes and mask dressed as themselves, we want to show that the media only shows one side of young people, we aren't the same and we never will be. We have our own voices, styles and views of society.

While we are filming other parts of the video, the costume will change, the characters will be wearing more hipster like clothes. As shown in the pictures. We choose these clothes because in our areas we have chosen to film this is what typically people wear. And looking at dance videos this is the costume they wear so we have decided to follow this convention.

We have decided to use skateboards and roller skates , a bat and knuckle busters as a prop.

Difficulties/Problems to overcome

We had a few difficulties, mainly trying to express our idea. We had a lot of ideas in the beginning. For example, we wanted to show death in our video and use an object to represent the third character, but when explaining it, many people thought it would be difficult to express.  We overcame this when our teacher showed us a music video. The video was simple and helped showed camera techniques. We stuck with our idea but simplified it, removing the idea of death and changed the beginning with young children instead of the graveyard and the end with a powerful message. Showing love and unity instead of societies wants.

Teaser Video

what we learnt

While filming we found it hard as we didn't really plan what exactly what to film. so now we know the importance of scheduling and planning what shots to do. Also we wish we had done shorter shots, as while editing we realised it was really hard to cut the shots up, to hit the beat of the song, so will take this in consideration while filming.

It was really hard filming as having to wait for people to walk past, waiting for cars to drive by, as we were filming on a small road.

Inspiration

While researching we were influenced by different aspects of their videos/styles. We were influenced by the Blonde video ‘Loved you more’ as we feel the storyline is similar to ours, but will have performance in the video.

We love the way in the actual video ‘You and me’ the use of scenery. We will incorporate this in our video. Going to many locations.

We love the artist Kehlani as she is very unique in her own world, not a stereotypical singer; she’s into more artistic videos. And the fact she does videos with one character is very interesting just focusing on her and the scenery.

We have decided to shot our video in  locations that are typically seen in dance/house music videos, as it would be easier to get candid shots of people dancing and having fun. As we are unable to stage these. We are shooting in Shoreditch and Camden for our party scenes, as the night life is what we are looking for. We are also filming in Brick Lane as it has nice creative art work.

For our second scene with the young versions of the characters will be done in Haggerston park.

We have decided to film in Liverpool street, during rush hour to show the rush of feelings between friends.

LOCATIONS

Why will our video be successful?

Our video is based on real life issues, what young people really think about. It's a stage of life where your still finding yourself, at time your friends play a big influence in your lives. So we believe our video will be relatable to our audience.  Our video is non linear adding enigma to our video, the audience will want to know why they all meet in the beginning.

Even though our video is about a  life issue we feel as the song is upbeat and we will be filming in fascinating locations, it will never bore the audience.  We will show emotions through our visuals, such as young people playing, groups of people skateboarding.

Unlike conventional dance videos where their are groups of people dancing. We have decided to have shots of groups of people wearing all black with white mask. To show the subliminal message of our video, that young people are marginalized and portrayed as bad in society and this is done through media, mainly in shows and music. We want the people to take off the mask and show that they have their own individual identify, not just what is given to them.

We feel this will make our video successful as most of the time there isn't really a voice for the youth.
