Tableau Desktop

• Desktop application

• Read only data discovery tool (you can't change the data)

• Drag and drop interface

• Used to create visualizations

• Two versions: personal and professional

• License required for each named user

Tableau Reader

• Free Desktop application

• Allows users to view and interact with tableau workbook files

• No security - if you  have the file you can view it

• A snap shot of the data gets sent with the workbook (workbooks cannot be automatically updated)

Tableau Server

• Allows users to view and interact with tableau workbooks

• Server is hosted in your own environment

• security is built in at the "project" level (interact, view underlying data, download...)

• every user who is going to view a workbook needs a named license

• Can be used to share data sources

Tableau Online

• Same capabilities as tableau server but hosted in tableau's cloud

• Allows users to view and interact with tableau workbooks

• security is built in at the "project" level (interact, view underlying data, download...)

• Can be used to share data sources

Tableau Public

• free tableau server that Allows users to view and interact with tableau workbooks

• no security - everything published to tableau public is public and can be found, viewed, and interacted with
