What are some stories in the Bible that deal with food? In what ways does our need for food and our delight in food lead us to consider our need for God and our delight in God?

The Bread of Life

Christ Is the Bread from Heaven Who Gives Life to the World

One of the places we see the Scriptures use the concept of food to illustrate true things about God is in the Gospel of John. Using the example of God’s provision of manna for Israel in the wilderness, Jesus claimed to be the Bread from heaven who gives life to the world. The work God requires of us is to believe in Christ, who has given His body and blood as a sacrifice for our salvation. As we are joined to Jesus, we are sent to the world in the way the Father sent His Son.

You need Jesus—not some creed, code, or cause. You don’t go beyond Jesus. You may go deeper into Jesus, but you’ll never go beyond Jesus. The table is set. Come and dine.
–Adrian Rogers (1931-2005)

1. The Bread from heaven gives life to the world.

John 6:25-34

What are some reasons people might “follow” Jesus for what He can give them but not for who He is? How does this view of following Jesus distort the biblical perspective?

What are some common things in which people seek satisfaction? What are examples of “bread” that perishes?

What is the root cause of grumbling? How can we use God’s gifts in a way that cultivates a holy hunger for being satisfied in God alone?

Christ is our Bread; because Christ is Life, and bread is life.
–Tertullian (circa 160-225)

2. Jesus is the Bread of life from heaven.

John 6:35-51

Is it paradoxical to be told to do the work of “believing”? Why or why not? Why is it important to note the ongoing nature of believing in Jesus?

In what ways does our confidence in the sovereignty of God impact our evangelism? Why is it important to emphasize our responsibility to “believe” in order to receive eternal life?

We are all when we pray God’s beggars…What does the beggar ask of thee? Bread. And what dost thou ask of God, but Christ, who saith, ‘I am the living Bread which came down from heaven’?
–Augustine (354-430)

3. Eternal life is found only in the sacrifice of Jesus.

John 6:52-58

How did the Father’s sending of the Son impact Jesus’ view of His ministry? How should the Son’s sending of us impact our view of life?

There is a hunger in the human heart that none but Christ can satisfy. There is a thirst that none but he can quench.
–John Stott (1921-2011)

Jesus, the Bread of life, promised to leave us with sustaining power for His mission. He promised to send His Spirit as a helper, One who would live within us and accomplish the works He has called us to do. So great is the hope of the Spirit in us that Jesus made this claim: “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father” (John 14:12).

Jesus Christ is the Bread of life from heaven, the One in whom we are sustained and satisfied. Energized by His Spirit, we move forward for His kingdom, representing Christ the King, urging the hungry and needy to turn to Christ for salvation.

Atonement-Driven Life

Life in Light of Christ’s Sacrifice

The atonement of Christ has practical significance for the Christian’s daily life. In this session, we look at life in light of Christ’s sacrifice. The author of Hebrews builds on the truth of the atonement by challenging us to draw near to God with confidence, hold unwaveringly to God’s promises, and encourage one another in love and good deeds.
