NOT SO MUCH DIVERSITY IN IT

why we do it?

  • EMPOWER WOMEN IN THE COMMUNITY IN ORDER TO HAVE MORE PROJECTS LED BY WOMEN AND FOCUSED ON WOMEN.
  • ENLARGE THE OSM WOMEN'S NETWORK.
  • HAVE MORE PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN IN OSM AND TECH ACTIVITIES.
  • CREATE MORE SPACES IN WHICH WE CAN DISCUSS THE ROLE, REPRESENTATION AND PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN.
  • DISCUSS BETTER CODES OF CONDUCT IN THE COMMUNITY THAT APPROPRIATE FOR ALL.
  • CREATE MORE RELEVANT GEOSPATIAL DATA FOR WOMEN

ONLY 3% OF THE OSM COMMUNITY ARE WOMEN

the streets of women

  • The project arises around International Women's Day 2018
  • It is intended to make survey information about passages, streets, avenues, roads that are named after a woman also linking it to Wikipedia to check if there is a biography written about her

@geochicasOSM

the streets of women

  • Script based on NODE
  • TILE REDUCE library from OSM to create the GEOjson
  • Local name databases from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics instead of external APIs like Genderize
  • Wikidata query to extract 68,445 articles about women

@geochicasOSM

the streets of women

  • Selection of cities we knew and wanted to work with using Planet OSM
  • Filter only the streets of the map
  • Cross-reference from the Spanish names database with the OpenStreetMap database with an 8% margin of error
  • Filter streets by male or female name
  • Manually cleaning any errors (streets named after flowers) and add the Wikipedia sources
  • Generate the last clean data base linked to OpenStreetMap to create the Geojson file (tags and geometries) and the stats file.
  • Upload the three resultant files to our Github
