Goodwin believed there was 7 elements of a music video
1)Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics i.e within the music video for the song their are elements which are suited to the artists chosen genre. This allows the audience to be comfortable in the fact that they're watching the right thing for them as it is from a genre they like as well as allowing the artist to follow the codes and conventions of the genre to ensure that they shall be pleasing their audience and keeping to what they expect.
2) There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals, meaning that what is being shown in the video is relatable and fits to the lyrics within the song.
3) There is a relationship between music and visuals so either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting, the visuals match the music beat, through the micro elements.
4) The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist could develop motifs that recur across their work. So a visual style which the artist is presenting so to help build a relationship with their audience.
5) There is frequently reference to notion of looking i.e screens within screens or telescopes etc. As well as there being particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. This means that the audience is viewing he artist in a voyeuristic way, one which the artist themselves is unaware of.
6)There is often inter-textual references this would include examples such as TV shows, films, other music videos as well as various other forms of mass media etc.
7) Finally a music video includes the concept of whether the video is primarily performance based, concept based or narrative based as well as how elements of each is used within it.
