The majority of the budget goes toward funding existing core services - things like policing, fire and rescue, utilities (incl. water and sewer), facilities (recreation centres) and other city infrastructure.
How you can be involved:
- Provide input on priorities and what's important to you
- Contribute by attending online forums, open houses, focus groups and public hearings
- Fill out Talk Vancouver surveys and comment cards
- Provide commentary back to staff through 3-1-1 and service staff interactions throughout the year

Each year we seek out your feedback on how we are doing - items like service levels, quality of life and more.
How the Council gets involved:
- Provide feedback through financial committee to staff
- Review and debate staff reports and recommendations
- Make motions and amendments
- Approve budgets and plans
- Provide direction through priority setting
How City staff get involved:
- Provide recommendations for spending
- Create strategies and plans for completion of programs and services
- Follow approved direction provided through existing strategies and plans (ie. Capital Plan, Housing Vancouver Strategy, 5-year Financial Plan & more)
External factors include items like:
- Economic environment and current social and community issues
- Funding and policy priorities from other levels of government
- Metro Vancouver taxes and requirements
- Translink changes and supports needed
- Best practices and financial standards
