+ Hi Friends, Welcome to our Dealing with Emotions class. I am Heather Portwood, homeschooling momma of 6 and wife to my amazing husband Christian….Who’s especially grateful for how oils can help with emotions ;) We have been using Essential Oils for 9 years and I can’t imagine our life without them.


+ In this class we are going to learn all about the basics of how Essential Oils can help support our emotions.


+ Disclaimer: I am not a dr. and sometimes dealing with emotions can be bigger than just bad moods - working with a mental health professional is helpful.

Examining Your Emotional State


+ The first step in really figuring out how to deal with the emotions you’re experiencing in life is being honest with yourself. Combining that with the experience and advice of a mental health professional, you can begin to know which emotions and causes need to be dealt with.


+ Young Living has created blends specifically for emotional support and dealing with some of the issues at the root cause of those emotions - it’s a matter of finding what works best for you and your emotional state.

Essential Oils and the Limbic System

+ Did you know our emotions are deeply embedded in our cells? How can essential oils help? Essential oils directly stimulate the limbic system of our brain – this is the “EMOTIONAL BRAIN”.


+ When we touch or see something, our brain processes what we are touching and seeing before we REACT. When we smell something, it is quite the opposite– we REACT first and then we process what happened. Just walk into a room with Lavender diffusing and you’ll know what I mean. You will FEEL relaxed before you realize what you are smelling is Lavender. When you smell cookies baking, you FEEL hungry and comforted before you realize you just ate and probably should not indulge. Smelling various essential oils and applying to various points on the body can help us to boost our mood in ways that move us to the positive and help us to transform and change our negative emotional patterns.


+ Being a homeschool mom of 6…Diffusing all day is a MUST ;) It has provided our family with great emotional and health support. Here is a list of oil’s we like to diffuse for different purposes, including emotional support:


+ I usually start my diffusers up around 7:00 am and love to “Clear the Air” getting ready for a new day. Peppermint and Orange is my fav in the mornings. Purification and Citrus Fresh is another. Around 12:00 we need some “Mood Motivators”. Valor and Frank, Motivation blend, Believe is another great one too. Ok mamma’s about 4:00 pm we have the witching hour so we like to go for the blend Harmony or Surender. Joy and Peppermint are also a favorite. 7:00 we get our night time regimen going. Peace and Calming, Gentle Baby, Lavender and Cedarwood. All are amazing for sleep.

Finding Your Center

 


+ It’s always good to start from a centered place, allowing you to see the road ahead a little clearer. Every morning I put Valor on my shoulders starting the day from a place of gratitude.


+ Grounding Essential Oil is a very emotional relaxing oil it will help to stabilize and calm you usually on first application. This is a good oil for those who make poor choices in relationships, work or home because they simply are in denial of their own true reality. Many times this happens because we just don't know how to deal with the emotional component so we get stuck and can't move forward. Here are a few oils in Grounding:
*Spruce : is grounding and releasing.
*Cedarwood : has an earthy aroma that gives you a sense of security. It is calming, purifying and grounding.
*White Fir : is very grounding and anchoring. It relaxes the body, while stimulating the mind.


+ Accepting yourself as you are is a big part of finding who you are - Acceptance Essential Oil is an excellent blend for so many things in the emotional category…. that I use it every almost every single day. Everyone I know who uses this oil loves the scent! Wear it as a perfume and notice how you and the people around you feel. I also love this one in the diffuser as well, you can add a bit of any Citrus oil too.

Think Happy Thoughts

 


+ Joy is the main one that comes to mind when thinking of oil blends that promote feelings of happiness - I love to apply a few drops over my heart. Jasmine, Palmarosa, Rose, Bergamot….how can any one go wrong with this blend?!?


+ Tangerine for optimism... we all know hard times come to everyone, but the happiest people find the good even in the difficult situations. To refocus on everything going right in your life, diffuse Tangerine. It helps so much to create a happy outlook. Or try rubbing a few drops between your hands and inhaling the scent to help cheer up your day.


+ Sometimes all it takes to get happy is to forget your stresses and worries, and Stress Away’s name says it all - Here’s a fun diffuser recipe that includes Stress Away that will help put you in a happy mood. “Creamsicle” 3 drops Citrus Fresh 2 drops Stress Away 1 drop orange.

Find Your Motivation

+ We all need some motivation in life. This is one way Essential Oils have helped me tremendously. Have you ever faced a significant crisis in your life? Have you experienced the power of purpose and determination once the crisis was over and you came out on the other side? You likely didn’t know that courage was there but your mission was clear. Crisis was what actually brought me to the oils… I was a desperate mom who needed some answers for my chronically sick child. So when I saw how amazing they worked, I had to tell every mom who would listen. We were also in a financial crisis. I really wanted to take some of the burden off my Husband who was working 60-70 hours a week. Now I wholeheartedly want to help others take charge of their heath and also to be able to be financially secure. Some of the oils I love using to help motivate me are the blends Envision, Live with Passion and Believe.

+ Some other blends that come to mind for getting and keeping someone going towards their goals are Motivation, Magnify Your Purpose, and Fulfill Your Destiny - A few drops in the diffuser or applying to the inside of your wrists and over your heart.

De-fog, Refocus

 


+ Sometimes a moment of clarity is needed as you learn to navigate your emotions and work towards finding healing. I love to use Awaken!! Awaken will help stimulate the creativity and intuitive side of the right brain. So, if you are always stuck in the left logical side of your brain then Awaken Essential Oil will be great oil for you! Apply several drops (2-4) to wrists, edge of ears, forehead, neck and feet


+ Common Sense helps with rationality and Clarity helps with mental clarity and focus. A great complimentary oil to both of those blends is Brain Power.

 

+ Diffusing is one way to use these oils for focus. Also applying to the brain stem, at the base of the neck, is a very effective place for application.

Empowering Yourself

 

+ Part of emotional healing is not only accepting yourself, but also believing in yourself and giving yourself permission to succeed.

 

+ Believe, Envision, and Live Your Passion can all help when it comes to self-confidence and seeing your future more clearly. Believe will help to release emotions of despair and inadequacy that are typically stored in the lungs of the body according to Traditional Chinese Medicine; and it will bring stability to the emotions by restoring hope and desire. Envision will help release the fear of moving forward if you feel stuck and embrace a new vision of your future. Live Your Passion was designed to inspire the heart-felt passion within us and to foster an optimistic attitude towards our goals and dreams. It also supports us in fostering enthusiasm for life through challenges, especially when taking on new ventures or in times of transition. Apply 2-4 drops on ears, wrists, neck, diffuse or directly inhale.

Outshining the Blues

 

+ The path to emotional healing is long and there can be some high highs but also some low lows. There are a number of oil options for dealing with the blues. I personally use Release and Forgiveness. Both have an uplifting aroma and help with releasing harmful memories and promote a willingness to move forward. I apply to my stomach over the navel area and also on the inside of my wrists and over my heart.

 

+ Citrus Fresh is filled with citrus oils, which help uplift. I like to add a few drops of Frankincense to diffuse it with to put smiles on our family’s faces.

 

+ Valor often gets talked about for its ability to promote feelings of confidence, but it also has a calming and uplifting aroma and can help improve moods on bad days. Valor is one that really helps me when I have, what I call, “Epsodes of Uneasiness”. The times where I can’t really pinpoint what is actually the problem but i’m just very unsettled. I like to apply to my shoulders and chest and directly inhale.

Processing Trauma

 

 

+ Traumatic events leave a mark on our psyche and affect our emotions and thinking for years. Just want to let you know you are loved and there is no shame in getting help…. NONE AT ALL!!! I have been there, as I am sure some of you have too. Working with a mental health professional is important in dealing with serious issues.

 

+ Unresolved trauma can cause a lot of frustration and anger. My favorite emotional resource is “Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils” by Carolyn Mein...you can get that on Amazon…..Lets see what it says on how to use the blends SARA and Release. One of the ways listed, for SARA, is under the emotion of Abuse (all/any) Our affirmation is “I deserve to be loved”…you can also use scripture as well…...and we apply on the alarm point "cellular memory” which is right above the navel. Often in trauma we can go through emotions of just feeling “wrong”…our affirmation is “I am true to my source” and apply Release to the alarm point area which is over the spleen.

 

+ Trauma Life is a blend of heavy hitting oils - Valerian, Helichrysum, Rose, Sandalwood - and is designed specifically for exploring difficult emotions and experiences. Trauma Life can particularly help with getting a good night’s sleep for people who struggle with it. You can use as often as you need especially before bed. Apply a few drops to wrists, behind ears, neck and feet.

Finding Peace

+ Finding peace and being at peace with yourself go hand in hand and is a big key to not reversing the work you’ve done to help heal and strengthen your emotional state. I encourage you to speak life over yourself. Take a few moments throughout the day in a quite space to apply your oils and say some affirmations. Here are some of my favorites.

*All I need to do right now is breathe.
*I am safe; all is well.
*I can easily shift my heart to feel peace.
*My need to feel calm is being fully met.


+ Forgiveness and Harmony can work hand in hand -Using them both daily can help you to be aware of allowing the soul to forgive, forget and release on so many levels. And as we know with most emotional and physical blocks our first step starts when we can release denial and begin to forgive ourselves. Areas for application are the shoulders, neck, throat, spine wrists and feet.

 

+ Peace & Calming - I think this is a must have especially if you have any littles that can’t communicate their emotions or how they feel yet. My favorite diffuser blend with Peace & Calming is 4 drops P & C and 3 drops white Angelica. Put your diffuser in your bathroom with this blend going sit in a hot bath and just try to let go.

 

+ Hope Essential Oil was blended specifically to give us hope for the future on a mental, spiritual and emotional level. It reconnects us with our core strength so we can ease stress and despair. And move forward with optimism and inner power.

 

+ One of my favorite scriptures for peace is "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."
Romans 15:13

Stay Vigilant

 

 

+ Staying the course when dealing with emotions and getting yourself to a healthy place can be a long road - I encourage you to stay vigilant and know that you are worth all the hard work towards a peaceful and happier self.

 

+ Let's go over a few oils that I like using with emotional oils to help enhance them. Frankincense, for centuries, has helped in the ability to harness the power of our own connection on a emotional, spiritual and mental level! Sacred Mountain helps to create feelings of security and protection. Use it to help bring awareness on a personal level. And White Angelica…for those who need support from negative situations or do not feel emotionally safe, White Angelica really helps with the feeling of comfort and security. All of these I like to apply to the wrists, neck, ears and diffuse.
