Each imprint method has its own unique advantages and disadvantages.
Before you choose one for your design project, it’s important to do your due diligence and decide which technique is best for you.
This method uses combinations of four different colors of ink (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) to produce practically any color possible. It’s the most cost-effective choice for prints containing more than three colors.
With this technique, you pick out several pre-mixed PMS inks (usually between 1 and 3) from which to create your design.
Foil stamps are applied to the paper using heat and pressure, creating a smooth look that stands out.
With embossing or debossing, your design is imprinted directly into the texture of the paper. Embossed images are raised, while debossed designs are recessed down into the stock.
4 color process offers the greatest variety, with literally millions of possible hues. PMS ink and foil have a more limited selection.
For the best consistency, go with PMS ink, foil stamping, or embossing/debossing. 4 color process sometimes produces slight variations in color.
PMS is the best option for direct color matching, such as when you want a design to match a specific branded color scheme.
4 color process is the best choice if you want a design to encompass photos or illustrations with a full spectrum of color. Monotone or duotone images, however, can be created with PMS ink as well.
Metallic PMS ink adds a bit of shine to your design. For a more overt metallic effect, use reflective foil stamping.
A number of neon PMS inks are available, allowing you to create super-bright elements that really pop from your design.
The wrong imprint method can make your design completely incomprehensible.
