Music institutions are the companies that find and create music videos the consumers watch. There are 4 main institutions dominating todays industry.

  1. Universal music Group
  2. Sony Music Entertainment
  3. Warner Music group
  4. EMI Music Publishing.

Universal Music Group was founded in 1934, they are the worlds largest music content company. UMG discover and develop recording artists and songwriters then go onto market and promote their music through a variety of different formats and platforms eg. Youtube and other merchandising methods such as clothing lines and live shows.

Sony is a global recording company,it is home to a number of labels including Epic records, Roc nation and Columbia records. Sony Music have a worldwide distribution access for music artists who want to be well known around the globe, this consists of artists promoting their music in different countries around the world to attract a fan base that will follow them throughout their career.

Warner Music Group was founded in 1958. Warner Music offer artist management and uses similar merchandising methods to previous music institutions. The institution is home to record labels such as Rhino and Sire and have also assisted many artists that have become very successful such as GreenDay , Plan B and Estelle.

EMI founded in 1931 is the smallest out of the big 4 and unlike the previous institutions mentioned EMI is a British company based in London. EMI associated artists include Massive Attack.
