What is Krump?

KRUMP=Kingdom Radically Uplifted Mighty Praise

  • freestyle street dancing
  • energetic and erratic movements
  • adapt according to personality

Like most reasons that dancers dance, Krumping can be a tool to escape from reality. This spasmodic  volatile primitive dance style originates from the Streets of Los Angeles and is very expressive as well as being precise in the forms represented. This is Society's vice to break away from daily violent activities that became imperative to Urban Culture.

History behind Krump

  • Christian roots
  • style meant to release anger
  •

The dance of KRUMPing orginated from Los Angeles during the 1990s.It all began with Tommy the clown who is a hip-hop dancer and his crew of other KRUMP dancers during his "Battle Zone" dance competition. It became very popular through the movie called "Rise" which gave southern Californians a view of a new freestyle form of dancing

Vitals of Krump

  • Music
  • Face paint
  •

Hip-hop style is the type of music played during krump dances. Tight Eyez, orginator of Krump,   produced albums that promotes spirituality of the dance. It sets the mood tempo and tone of the dance "battle." The music is usually upbeat and aggressively lyricized.
Face-painting was a part of the clowning style,  however it was not standard. It is more likely to be homage to African war dancers, rather than clown-style. The artist Missy Elliott, and the feature film Rize, give brief examples of the primitive style.

KRUmp Groups

Many krump groups are known as "families" or "fams,". The senior member is known as the "Big Homie". He/She  serves as both a dance instructor and a spiritual mentor of sorts. The family structure is hierarchical and within the fams each person is given a rank based on thier skill.  The ones who follow or have Big Homies are known as Lil Homies or "Lils", they are taught the big homie's style and create their very own styles in the process. Big Homies  can also set a value  as a father figure to some.

Popularity of Krump

"Kommunity Krump", is a dance group formed in Europe. Europe has provided a series of dance competions for these groups called  "Monster Krump."
A KRUMP dance tournament was conducted in Japan nationwide with the first prize being a battle against Lil' C and Miss Prissy. Lil' C is featured in the David Michalek Exhibit Slow dancing. It has been exhibited in New York City, Los Angeles, California, and London.

Present Krumping

An urban street dance form that began in Los Angeles has spread amongst the rising dance culture. The growing demand has made it a well-known form of dance style as well as making a exploit in the fashion world. Everything now has a structured pattern and definite style from what to wear and which color paints to be represented . KRUMP is a major part of the hip-hop culture and continues to be characterized through dance battles by free expressive and highly energetic movements of the arms, , legs, head, chest and feet.

summary

The reason I chose this dance is because I feel that it involves our current generation that is enhancing in the dance world. Besides watching battles of the dance, I enjoy participating in KRUMPing experiences inside competitions and in the church world. I feel future dancers will incorporate a piece of KRUMPping their creative dance styles. One style that has taken off is the Dougie. There was always be a demand for dance but to supply this type of style one must be creative, spiritual, and original within themselves. I believe this is dance that stands out and has made its mark in many areas of dance history.
