Monthly Meetings

  • This year, all monthly meetings are mandatory! If you can't make a meeting, email us at dullesmualphatheta@gmail.com at least 24 hours in advance with a valid excuse.
  • We have a morning and afternoon meeting on each meeting day. 
  • Attending only the meeting isn't worth any points, but attending the activity after the afternoon meeting will give you 0.5 points!

Points and Volunteering

  • 7 points are required this semester
  • Points can be fulfilled through:
    • After Meeting Activities
    • Competitions
    • A-hall tutoring
      • 1 hour is required, but you can do more!
    • Attending FMPs
    • Complete a substantial work of math on your own (email for approval before you work on it) Ex.
      • Study guide over a math topic 
      • Proposing FMP Curricula

Texas A&M University Math Contest

Points: 2.5

Saturday, November 12, 2022

Sign Up Deadline: 11/4/2022

 

  • Subject Exams: based on your math class (1 point)
  • Best Student Exams: general math concepts (1 point)
  • Power Team: Work with a team to solve a set of proof-based problems. The problems will be available a week before the contest, and you can work on them until the contest day. (0.5 points)
  • Email us the solutions the day of the contest to earn your points
  • Buzz Contest: game played at the end of the competition, open to everyone (0.5 points)
  • You must submit your solutions to the competition to earn points

HMMT November

Points: 1.5 for participating in only the individual rounds and 3 points for participating in all rounds

 

 

  • Will be held online or in person on November 12, 2022

  • Exact details have not been finalized.

  • Individual General Round, Individual Theme Round, Team Round, and Guts Round
  • Open to all students who would like to participate
  • Teams of 4-6

Friday Math Practices

 

  • First FMP will be on September 16th.
  • Every Friday except those when there are MAO or SNHS meetings
  • FMPs will cover various topics such as contest math, math class help, and applied math topics. For example:
    • Cryptography
    • Linear Algebra
    • Graph Theory
  • You MUST be paying attention to receive full points :)
  • Bring questions of your own to ask!
  • Points: 1-1.5 points per practice
    • You can earn that extra 0.5 points by answering questions, staying for extra time to ask questions, or when FMPs go on for longer than usual!

Math and Science Night

 Friday, November 18th 2022

  • In partnership with SNHS and SciNow, we will host a Math and Science Night for elementary and middle schoolers in FBISD
  • Participation is mandatory for all members in MAO :)
  • You can volunteer by helping set up, tearing down, hosting a booth, making posters, donating food/materials
  • Start brainstorming booth ideas with your friends. Some examples include:
    • Golden Ratio in Math/architecture
    • Fermi Questions
    • Tessellation/Origami with Geometry
    • Probability with weighted dice
    • Cryptography
  • Volunteer Sign Ups will be sent out closer to the event
  • Cap of 4 points total can be earned!

TShirt Design Contest!

Deadline: September 23rd, 2022

  • We are designing new t-shirts this year
  • Create a design and email it to us for 1 point! If your design is especially good, we may give you an extra 0.5 points!
  • Guidelines:
    • Max 3 colors
    • For now, club shirts are required to be red or blue
    • Must include the club name
  • Be as creative as you like, but please make sure the design is school appropriate
  • Members will get to vote on the designs

Meeting Activity: Buzz Contest

Everyone get into groups of twenty people. An officer will be at each group to explain the rules of the game.

The Codewords

BANG: The number contains a 5 (in its base-10 representation) or is divisible by 5.

BUZZ: The number contains a 7 (in its base-10 representation) or is divisible by 7.

CRASH: The number is prime.

FIBBI: The number is a Fibonacci number.

 

Time limit: 10 seconds. Last five people in each group can combine together for the final match.
