Important Information

  • Dues and the General Membership Form were due on 9/16.
    • If you didn't turn in your forms or dues by the deadline, you will receive 1 demerit, but you still must turn in forms and pay the dues to be considered a member and participate in MAO sponsored activities.

Monthly Meetings

  • This year, all monthly meetings are mandatory! If you can't make a meeting, email us at dullesmualphatheta@gmail.com at least 24 hours in advance with a valid excuse.
  • We have a morning and afternoon meeting on each meeting day. 
  • Attending only the meeting isn't worth any points, but attending the activity after the afternoon meeting will give you 0.5 points!

Points and Volunteering

  • 7 points are required this semester
  • Points can be fulfilled through:
    • After Meeting Activities
    • Competitions
    • A-hall tutoring
      • 1 hour is required, but you can do more!
    • Attending FMPs
    • Complete a substantial work of math on your own (email for approval before you work on it) Ex.
      • Study guide over a math topic 
      • Proposing FMP Curricula

Texas A&M University Math Contest

Points: 2.5

Saturday, November 12, 2022

Sign Up Deadline: 10/14/2022

 

  • Subject Exams: based on your math class (1 point)
  • Best Student Exams: general math concepts (1 point)
  • Power Team: Work with a team to solve a set of proof-based problems. The problems will be available a week before the contest, and you can work on them until the contest day. (0.5 points)
  • Email us the solutions the day of the contest to earn your points
  • Buzz Contest: game played at the end of the competition, open to everyone (0.5 points)
  • You must submit your solutions to the competition to earn points

HMMT November

Points: 1.5 for participating in only the individual rounds and 3 points for participating in all rounds

 

 

  • Will be held online or in person on November 12, 2022

  • Exact details have not been finalized.

  • Individual General Round, Individual Theme Round, Team Round, and Guts Round
  • Open to all students who would like to participate
  • Teams of 4-6

RCML Fall

Points: 1 point for participating

 

 

  • Will be held in person after school on from 3 to 3:30 PM at Dr. Hren's Room (A208).

  • Interschool contest, so one team of 10 students will be made. First come first serve, so if you want to participate, sign up quickly.

UIL and TMSCA

Points: 1 point for taking each test

 

  • There are three math tests for UIL and TMSCA
  • Number Sense: 80 questions, 10 minutes, all mental math
  • Calculator: 70 questions, 30 minutes
  • General Math: 60 questions, 40 minutes
  • FMP sometime in November dedicated to information about UIL and TMSCA as well as tryouts to gauge interest after.
  • Teams will be decided next semester.

Friday Math Practices

 

  • Every Friday or possibly Thursday except those when there are MAO or SNHS meetings
  • FMPs will cover various topics such as contest math, math class help, and applied math topics. For example:
    • Cryptography
    • Linear Algebra
    • Graph Theory
  • You MUST be paying attention to receive full points :)
  • Bring questions of your own to ask!
  • Points: 1-1.5 points per practice
    • You can earn that extra 0.5 points by answering questions, staying for extra time to ask questions, or when FMPs go on for longer than usual!
  • Next FMP: Oct 14th on Epidemiology!

Math and Science Night

 Friday, November 18th 2022

  • In partnership with SNHS and SciNow, we will host a Math and Science Night for elementary and middle schoolers in FBISD
  • Participation is mandatory for all members in MAO :)
  • You can volunteer by helping set up, tearing down, hosting a booth, making posters, donating food/materials
  • Start brainstorming booth ideas with your friends. Some examples include.
    • Fermi Questions
    • Tessellation/Origami with Geometry
    • Probability with weighted dice
    • Cryptography
  • Cap of 3.5 points total can be earned! Extra points can be transferred to YES. Double dipping with SNHS is allowed. If you are creating a booth for another club (ex. SciNow), you can still earn points for MAO!
  • Creating a booth guarantees the full 3.5 points. Other forms of volunteering will be worth less points each, but they can add up to 3.5 points.
  • You can also earn points from poster making!
