Points

  • 7 points due in May
  • All unfinished points from last semester will be added to this semester's requirement but doubled (and you will receive a demerit)
  • Demerit conference emails will be sent out soon, so check your inboxes to schedule a meeting

​​Seniors:

  • If you are applying for the scholarship, you must complete all points AND have 0 demerits over the past 2 years
  • If not, you still need to complete points in order to receive a cord and receive 2 or fewer demerits this year

Senior Scholarships

  • More information and application will be sent out soon
  • Scholarships of up to 500 dollars
  • Must have completed all your points and have no demerits for the past two years
  • Application will be due in the spring, and we will hold interviews with eligible candidates

Dulles TMSCA

  • SNHS is hosting Dulles TMSCA on 1/21!
  • Information about signing up and volunteering have already been sent out by SNHS
  • MAO will be offering 2.5 pts for those volunteering on the day of the event

T-Shirts

  • T-shirts have been ordered and manufacturing will begin soon
  • We will let you all know when they arrive, probably right before spring break
  • You must have paid dues in order to receive your t-shirt

University of Houston Math Contest

  • Will be held online on zoom on January 28, 2023

  • You can take as many tests as you want as long as the times don't conflict. 

  • You can only take the regular subject test for the class that you are currently taking at school. (If you are in a math class above calculus, take calculus)

RCML Round 1

  • Date: January 18
  • Points: 1
  • 30 minute test 
  • 10 questions 
  • 5 divisions: the division you choose has to be your current math class or a higher-level course
    • Pre-Algebra (Explorer)
    • Algebra (Mercury)
    • Geometry (Gemini)
    • Algebra II (Apollo)
    • Precalculus or above (Discovery)
  • There are three math tests for UIL: Number Sense, General Math, and Calculator
  • UIL Number Science will be after the post meeting activity
  • UIL Invitational A General Math and Calculator will be online on January 14th
  • General Math will be at 9 AM and Calculator at 9:45 AM
  • UIL Invitational B is in person at Travis High School on February 11th
  • Scores will be used to help decide teams

Math Bash

  • Dulles MAO is planning to host a math competition for elementary and middle schoolers
  • This contest will be called the Dulles Math Bash!
    • 2 Individual Round: 1 Traditional and 1 Fun Round
    • 1 Team Round
    • A Smackdown Round
  • Competition will take place on April 8th!
  • The theme will be the Solar System
  • Roles: Proctor, Writer, Grader, Tab
  • Participation is mandatory for everyone

Fermi Questions!

  • Form groups of four

  • Fermi questions are questions that seek a fast, rough estimate of quantity which is either difficult or impossible to measure directly.

  • Rules:
    DO NOT USE A CALCULATOR OR ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

  • Top 3 teams receive .5 extra points

Fermi questions use order-of magnitude estimates; you find the nearest power of 10 to the answer. Use scientific notation to help.

  • Ex. 2 x 10^2 will give you 2
  • 4 x 10^7 will give you 7
  • BUT 5 x 10^3 will give you 4 because 5 rounds up.
  • 8 x 10^11 gives 12
  • 4 x 10^-3 gives -3
  • 6 x 10^-5 gives -4

Correct answer: 5 points

1 more or less: 3 points

2 more or less: 1 point
Hints

You will receive 10 hints for free. Tell an officer about which question you want a hint on, and they will mark your paper to indicate you have used a hint. Some questions have multiple hints, so you may be able to ask about the same question multiple times. Don’t use hints too late because you will need time to calculate.
