What is BREEAM?
BREEAM is the world’s leading
sustainability assessment method for
masterplanning projects, infrastructure
and buildings. It recognises and reflects the
value in higher performing assets across
the built environment lifecycle, from new
construction to in-use and refurbishment.
BREEAM is the key mechanism for
measuring overall sustainability
performance of Transpennine Route
Upgrade (TRU) against the themes
and objectives set out in the TRU
Sustainability Strategy.

We’ve chosen BREEAM because it demonstrates an industry leading commitment to sustainability, and provides a set of single, measurable and comparable sustainability

the TRU – it helps us to deliver a strategic and integrated approach across a complex project.
Having BREEAM as a key tool of the TRU provides assurance to our key stakeholders and helps us to achieve our goals of delivering a legacy of a more sustainable railway.

There is a maximum of
168 BREEAM credits available,
grouped into 13 categories.
Credits are achieved through the provision of
robust evidence to demonstrate compliance with
the BREEAM assessment criteria, as defined in
the BREEAM Infrastructure Technical Standard.
There are two main assessment stages:
1. Strategic Stage
2. Project Detail Stage
The project Detail Stage is then split further into:
1. Interim (Design Stage) Assessment (optional)
2. Final (Post Construction) Stage

The TRU will target the BREEAM rating of ‘excellent’, and this has been reflected in the requirements process. This is also key as TRU is the only Network Rail programme in the BREEAM infrastructure pilot.

Structure of BREEAM on TRU
As the TRU is such a large, multi-asset programme, the BREEAM assessment has been split into a series of smaller, stand-alone assessments – this is based on the ‘packages’ of work within the TRU programme.
Each individual BREEAM assessment will generate a BREEAM score and rating, as demonstrated in the following example – at the end of the TRU programme, the BREEAM scores for each package will be amalgamated to generate an overall TRU BREEAM score and rating.
