Annie Jump Cannon

Early Life

Born: December 11th, 1863.

 

Place of birth: Annie was born in Dover, Delaware

 

Father: Wilson Cannon, state senator.

 

Mother: Mary Cannon. 

 

-Her mother was the one who sparked her fascination for astronomy at a young age.

Later life

Died: April 13, 1941 

 

Place of death: Cambridge, Massachusetts 

 

-Annie developed hearing loss after catching the scarlet fever. She was nearly deaf so she found it difficult to socialize.  

 

-She never married or had children.

Education

-Annie attended Wilmington Conference Academy, more commonly known today as Wesley College. 

 

-She studied under Sarah Frances Whiting. 

 

-She was valedictorian at Wellesley college 

She graduated with a degree in physics in 1884. 

 

-Sarah Frances Whiting, hired Annie as a junior physics teacher at the  college. 

 

-Annie finished her studies and received a MA from Wellesley college.

What she was known for 

-Annie Jump Cannon was responsible for classifying hundreds of thousands of stars. 

 

-She was also known for being apart of a group of bright female astronomers called "The Pickerings Women"
