Advising isn't about waiting for the stars to align, but instead, being proactive about seeking the support you need. Get in the habit of meeting regularly with advisors and being aware of important deadlines. This will help you make a positive impression on your advisors.

Referrals are Normal!
Many times advisors will know exactly how to instruct and support you through your academic journey. This being said, there are times they may need to outsource their support to someone more knowledgeable about a specific process. This is normal and you should expect to referrals at times.
Think of it like riding a tricycle- the more wheels there are to support you, the less likely you are to fall off the tricycle.

Don’t get us wrong, advisors are fantastic and at times they will be your superheroes on campus. This being said, their super-powers are limited in their scope of control. This means if a class is full or waitlisted, your advisor does not have the power to add you to the closed course roster.
They can help you make informed and realistic decisions about joining a waitlist or navigating course registration.

There is a ton of information out there and advisors are here to help you make sense of it all.
