Network Analysis

  • Network analysis found in the early 14th century
  • Early research using network analysis implemented in educational psychology, sociology and anthropology.
  • At the turn of the 20th century, Network analysis used by Simmel to examine how third parties could affect the relationship between two individuals and how organizational structures or bureaucracies were needed to coordinate interactions in large groups.

SNA?

  • Study of social entities and their interactions and relationships
  • These interactions could be represented as a network or graph
  • Social networks could be analyzed using centrality and prestige
  • lIt can be applied across disciplines—there are social networks, political networks, electrical networks, transportation networks, and so on.

What for?

Typical applications of social network analysis and data mining:

  • Detection of criminal activity, counter-terrorism, "homeland security," and intelligence
  • Analysis of relationships within companies
  • Sociological and anthropological studies
  • Reciprocal trust schemes such as eBay ratings
  • Recommended friends on Facebook – Filter or recommend social media content

Finding

influencer?

Why?

  • Focus on interaction rather than on individual behaviour

  • Allows to examine how the configuration of networks influences how individuals and groups, organizations, or systems function

  • Ability to zoom in and out the relation

How?

EVERYTHING is networked

We only need to find the connection

Step 1: Define Network

To use network analysis we have to answer this qustions

  • what the NODES?
  • how the nodes connected (EDGES)?
  • A NODE could be a name, organisation, a station, etc. It represents the actors.
  • An EDGES is an abstract relation between NODES

Step 2: Calculate

Step 3: Visualise

As we live in the connected era...

Understanding how the network develops and works is a must
