He used a variety of pitches, from a fastball that topped out at 90 miles per hour to a slower curveball that sat at 104, to keep hitters off-balance.
It was a much-needed win for Toronto, which has a long road ahead of it in the race for a postseason berth. They had lost three straight games the day before and were slipping further and further behind in the American League (AL) wild card race. But the Jays snapped a three-game losing streak thanks to a strong outing from Hyun-jin Ryu and a big performance from rookie second baseman Davis Schneider. Schneider went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, including a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 1-1. Toronto moved to within 1.5 games of AL wild-card contender Houston.

Toronto responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Ryu Hyun-jin led off the inning with a walk. Two batters later, he caught Tyler Freeman's grounder in his glove and threw him out at first base with a glove toss without pulling the ball away. However, his infield defense left something to be desired. With the bases loaded, he induced Ramirez to hit an infield grounder, but third baseman Matt Chapman dropped it. After the game, praise poured in from both inside and outside the organization for Ryu's performance. Toronto manager John Schneider said, "At his age, to come back and be so complete, it's unbelievable." But Ryu told local reporters, "Honestly, I'm not surprised (to get my velocity back). The most important thing is that I got my health back." "Now that I'm back in shape, 19가이드03 I can throw the ball where I need to," he said.
