Media institutions play a major role in the popularity of music magazines and other types of media which they publish.
Many media products have different genres and aims for their product, so they need to find a media institution that best suits their style and way of promotion and managing so they can get the best out of them.
Bauer
Bauer Media is one of the largest Europe based media institutions, which publishes more than 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations from all around the world.
The main music magazines which Bauer have portfolio's of are 'Q' magazine and 'Kerrang!'. These both contain elements of rock music, with 'Q' magazine also having an indie side to it as well.
The 'Q' magazine is so popular due to the extensive exposure it has from Bauer Media with the radio, TV and also the 'Q' awards that feature to increase the sales and readers of the Bauer Media products.
Immediate Media Co
The Immediate Media Company publishes over 50 magazines, over 30 websites and employs 750 staff.
The main music magazines they publish are 'Top of the pops' and 'BBC Music Magazine'. The typical genre for Immediate Media Co's music magazines is pop and softer music such as classical as this is the type of people they want to appeal to.
Immediate Media Co. try to appeal to all age groups as they have media products in all the different ages, for example, they publish 'Bob the Builder' which is aimed at small children, to 'Radio Times' which is targeted towards adults.
IPC Media
IPC Media is mostly famous for publishing TV and lifestyle magazines rather than music magazines including Woman's Weekly and Soaplife. However, they do have the portfolio for 'NME' music magazine, which is of the indie rock genre of music.
IPC Media produce and sell over 350 copies a year of magazine and digital media to their target audience.
NME has become hugely known and popular with different people because of their publishers being IPC, as many of the other magazines which are also published by them, give extra advertising due to the brand of the magazines and the popularity of all of them.
My music magazine 'Illuminate'
I believe that Bauer Media would be the best institution to publish my music magazine, as my genre is indie rock and this is the main genre that Bauer represent.
Bauer Media also is a well established media institution with many people being fans and knowing about the style they present themselves as. My music magazine would be well-known due to the advertising and publishing done by Bauer as they already know how to manage and publish indie rock magazines successfully, so they would have previous knowledge on how to make my magazine a success with potential readers.
Also as my music magazine, 'Illuminate' has a target audience for people around the late teens, young adult range, this is the main readers of Bauer published magazines, so the similarity between the other magazines will be an advantage to my magazine
