I am ______.

You have the power to change the life of any person who uses drugs...

but not in the way you might think.

I am                     .

I never thought I could impact someone's life the way I did my friend Alex's.

Do I report them to the authorities?

Do I ask for help from my boss?

Do I tell them to stop using?

I want to keep Alex safe. No matter what.

Things that I know are TRUE:

1. There are multiple, unique reasons why people use drugs — so I asked.

2. Telling Alex to stop using won't help.

3. Drug use is a different experience from person to person.

Context is key.

Drug

Shabu — injecting drug use

Set

Tired and lacked sleep because they're overworked, and they feel bad for using again.

Setting

Alone, in a motel room somewhere in the city for a couple of days

Everything went smoothly.

I knew Alex was safe.

Until a few days later...

Thankful for the things I learned:

  1. I learned what to expect when someone says "yes."

  2. I learned about the nature of different substances and the importance of context when using.

  3. This knowledge helped me support Alex better.

Like all of us,

Alex just wanted to be heard.

I am                     .

I am                     .

I am.

Redefining the goal with them is important

Learning evidence-based information about drugs and drug use helps

Just say no.

Just say know.
