“Mirai,” a malware strain that enslaves IoT devices into a botnet for use in large cyberattacks. The individual(s) who launched that attack used the name “Anna-Senpai” to release the source code for Mirai, spawning dozens of copycat attack armies online.
The attacks target unsecured MongoDB databases that have been left exposed to Internet connections with no password on the administrator account.
Security researchers confirmed that the number of hijacked MongoDB databases has gone from ~10,000 to ~28,000
