Introduction of importance of audience in map design and communication

Universal truths in design

Idiosyncracies in design

We can learn from marketing...

Four different groups:

  • Environmental scientists
  • Politicians belonging to a pro-union/worker party
  • Primary school students new to maps
  • High-school-/Gimnasium-educated working adults

Feel free to define and think about what might work for another fifth group too.

Now the Fun Part!

Take this dataset. It's a very interesting dataset, because you can look at it from two angles.

Your goal/assignment:

- Using the same spatial data, plan, design, and devise four separate thematic maps, one for each type of audience.

- Remember to think about what your different audiences will respond to and like

- Remember to try and add explicit and/or implicit traits to the map to help build a rapport with and communicate to your audience.
