Overview of animism

What is Animism ?

  • Animism is a belief  which shows that there is no separation between the spiritual world and the physical world.
  • The belief of a supernatural power that organizes and animates the material universe.
  • Also a belief that everything on this earth has a spirit or soul.
  • Some examples are rivers, plants, animals,stars, mountains and many more.
  • Each of those things can be considered a spirit that can offer help or harm towards people. 

ANIMISTIC beliefs .

  • Although each culture has it's own myths and beliefs animism is said to describe the most common, foundational of people's spiritual perspective.
  • Many groups or families that practice animism believe that spiritual guides walk through life with them.
  • They believed in animal totems, along with their beliefs comes rituals and ceremonies which were things they did to celebrate and honor the animal totems.  


Cultural Ceremonies 


  • Animism has been practiced since ancient times and is often mentioned in the bible.
  • Even today, animism still continues in most religious movements.
  • For example, animism plays a part in Shinto,  and eastern religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism.
  • It is also important to know that not all religious scholars define Animism the same way. Some people practice animism as a belief, while some classify animism as it's own religion. Most animist cultures have an overall religion.
