Front Cover no.1

This front cover was inspired by a photo of Emma Watson I found on pinterest. The idea of the text at the bottom came from 'self service' magazine.

Conventions found on this mock up:

  • Masthead
  • Central Image
  • Slogan

  • It is simple and elegant looking, which would attract me audience
  • The use of having only one image on the front cover is effective as it makes this image the focal point 
  • The page is not too distracting and uses formal language
  • The slogan further persuades them to buy the magazine as 'artistic' and 'elegant' have good connotations

Cons of this mock up

  • Personally I like the simplicity of this front cover however I will need to assess if it has enough features on it to attract my audience
  • Also I am not sure how much of a clear indication it gives about my genre

Why is this appropriate for your genre/audience?

  • Because the font used looks formal, elegant and classical
  • The model used as the central image appeals to my target audience as she looks beautiful and elegant however quite nature
  • The way the page is laid out is very clear and clean which would appeal to my audience as they would not want a lot of random text on their pages. Only purposeful text.

The inspiration of this mock up came from a issue of Vogue I had found at the very beginning of the course. The layout of the page, I also got the inspiration from a more recent issue of Vogue

Pros of this mock up

  • The Central Image clearly illustrates the genre through the use of the models prop (the violin)
  • The layout is clear and easy to read
  • Plugs are included that draw the reader in and gives them a taste of what the magazine will include
  • Quite simple however elegant looking
  • Also really like the use of the masthead being behind the central image
  • the font used looks classical and elegant

Cons of this mock up

  • The amount of plugs I have included may be a problem when using my actual photo shoot photos, there may not be enough room around the sides for this much text
  • The right side of the page is quite empty - does it make the magazine look less dramatic and exciting?
  • Even though I like the simplicity of this front cover- could it be too boring and not excite my reader enough?

Why is this appropriate for your genre/audience?

  • The pose the model is using in the central image makes her look determined, passionate and elegant reflecting the magazine in the same way
  • The use of the prop clearly indicates the genre of this magazine
  • The font looks Classical however has a modern twist on it, appealing to my target audience
  • The clean and clear layout attracts my audience

This front cover was inspired by a photo I found on Pinterest. I thought the way it is constructed and edited together is unique and will make my magazine stand out. The photos I will use will be close ups from my studio shoot

Why is this appropriate for your genre/audience?

  • Would this type of editing work with the photos I have already got? It might be hard to recreate this
  • It does not really demonstrate my genre that clearly
  • There are not many aspects included such as 'plugs' to draw the readers in- is it too simple and boring?
  • It does not reveal much about the magazine
  • The front cover is not stereotypical so stands out from the rest of the magazines and attracts readers
  • The masthead stands proud and bold
  • Lots of different images are used, showing variety in my magazine
  • This front cover is simple so looks artistic

  • This front cover is suitable because it looks artistic so appeals to a more mature and sophisticated audience- my target audience

  • The editing makes the front cover look dramatic and represents Classical Music in a modern light however still keeps the classical essence

Why is this appropriate for your genre/audience?

  • It is unique looking- very different from the music magazine content pages I analysed
  • Lots of graphic features are included, so the page looks busy and attractive to readers
  • There is enough room to write text that is relevant for this page
  • This page is artistic so automatically makes a statement about the magazine 
  • This page includes so many graphic features however presents them in a artistic way which makes this contents page look dramatic and elegant
  • All images and fonts used will look classical and link to my genre
  • Formal text will be used, when describing each article- which is appealing for my young however mature women audience
  • The images of the roses are stereotypical of what a elegant woman would like
  • Will this work in reality? Even though it looks good on the drawing, will my skills be good enough to make it look as good as this?
  • A lot of editing skills will be needed and everything will have to be precise to make this contents page perfect
  • May be to complicated compared to the rest of my magazine which is quite simple

  • Clearly laid out and the structure is good- this means readers can easily find the article they are looking for
  • Lots of graphic features are included of different sizes
  • Articles are clearly numbered so the audience can easily find what they are looking for
  • There is enough room for text
  • Too simple- there isn't really anything unique about it (it looks quite similar to other contents pages)
  • Classical Music Magazines are more formal and should include plenty of text- is there enough on this page?
  • Not many magazine features are found on this page- yet again does this make the design too boring and simple?
  • This contents page is suitable for my genre because it is neatly and clearly laid out. It does not look messy.

Why is this appropriate for your genre/audience?

  • Even though this page will be easy to recreate, it may look too empty and boring in the actual thing
  • Smaller text is used however no long paragraphs are used making the page yet again look empty
  • Is there enough going on this contents page? is it too simple?
  • In the original image, the contents page looks professional however may not look as good in the real thing
  • This simple design will be easy to recreate on Photoshop
  • Lots of graphic features are included on this page which makes it look busy without it looking messy
  • Lots of text is included and readers can easily find the articles they want
  • The simplicity makes the page look Classical
  • This design is clean, easy to understand and looks quite artistic even though it is quite simple

Why is this appropriate for your genre/audience?

  • This page is neatly laid out with the image on one side and the body copy on the other, making the page easy to read
  • Since there is no body copy around the image it means that the audience can focus on the image
  • The use of three poses edited together is good because it makes the artist look more dramatic
  • Because of the lay out, this means a lot of body copy can be used
  • Not enough graphic features on this page- could it be too boring?
  • Does the central image take too much of the space on the page? Could be debatable to make more room for more text
  • Do more aspects need to be included such as taglines etc.
  • Because the central image takes up a lot of the page, it becomes the focal point of the page. The poses and facial expressions used in the chosen central image show that the artist is passionate and determined, clearly illustrating my genre
  • The way the page is laid out means there is enough space to write a good amount of body copy, which most Classical Music Magazines have
  • The use of the header makes the page look formal and classic

  • Variety of images are used and also different camera angles are used on each image- a close up is used on one and a long shot on the other
  • The layout of the page is neat and tidy
  • There is enough room for a good amount of body copy
  • The big fonts used make the article look dramatic
  • Will this design work in reality? For example, will there be enough space for the text between the two photos
  • Is there too much going on, on one page for a magazine that is suppose to look 'simple'
  • It could be argued that the images take up too much of the page 
  • Only studio photos are used and not photos from other locations, this could show less variety in my magazine
  • This double page spread is suitable for my magazine because the images used clearly illustrate a Classical Theme
  • Lots of body copy is included
  • The fonts that will be used are going to be bold and make a statement

Why is this appropriate for your genre/audience?

  • There is only one image included which makes the featured artist the central focus
  • The image I have chosen to use is set in a different location which shows variety in my magazine
  • There is plenty of room for text
  • Neatly and clearly laid out
  • Looks bold and quite dramatic
  • May not be easy to read because of the background of the photo
  • Would be hard to edit
  • Text may not show up clearly on the image as it does not have a white background
  • Even though there is room for text, is there enough space for a articles worth?
  • The location in the photo and the model in the image clearly illustrate a Classical genre theme
  • Simple design and effective- lots of fashion magazines or more formal magazines have double page spreads that look like this
  • One side of the photo can be used for the title, sub-title and callouts. Since this leaves a lot of room, these can be made bold and big which will make them look more dramatic
