  • on the first day of battle General Johnston was killed
  • before General Grant and General Buell could meet, the Confederates attacked
  • Major success
  • Most blamed Grant for the Union being unprepared, but Lincoln said,"I cannot spare this man;he fights."

Union

  • General Grant and Don Carlos Buell
  • camped at Pittsburg Landing
  • 22 miles north of Cornith,Mississippi
  •   Major General William Sherman was the commander at  the Pittsburg Landing camps 
  • "Retreat? No. I propose to attack at daylight and whip them."                           -General Grant
  • 66,000 soldiers

Hornet's Nest

  • most soldiers were new recruits
  • few Union forces held up while Buell arrived with his defenses at the end of the day
  • Union wins the Battle of Shiloh
  • Beauregard realized he was outnumbered and retreated back to Cornith, Mississippi
  • Confederacy surrounded the Union
  • Some say the zipping bullets sounded like angry hornets

  • was the bloodiest battle up to that point in American History
  • after this battle, Americans knew this war was going to last a while
