One of the most common questions that anglers often ask themselves is whether fishing is actually a sport or not.

There are times when you fish because it is your hobby, and other times because you have gone boating or fishing.

Depending on how you look at fishing, whether it requires physical effort, skill or being competitive in nature, it may or may not be a sport, depending on what you want.

If you look at the definition of 'sport', fishing can be either competitive or uncompetitive, and it all depends on who you want, and I think the two most common definitions of fishing fall into two categories.

To discuss whether or not it is a sport, remember that sport can also include mental activity and fishing sometimes requires mental activity. There are some aspects of fishing that may not seem like a "sport" to those with a particular prejudice, but it is a sport nonetheless.  
    
Jeremy George Lake Charles When you look at fishing, it takes physical effort to land a big game fish, but if you can use the weight that the rod and reel take as weight, a fisherman doesn't have to fight all the time for a 200 pound fish. If you can catch a bigger fish than the one you fish and land the big fish in a fishing competition, then it is competition.

The bottom line is that fishing is a game and competition is the key, whether you spend hours fishing or sweating to perfect your performance and think about how to improve and do better on your next trip.  
    
It may not be so easy for many of us to be recognised as a sport by nature, but fishing has evolved and become a full-blown sport. If you have read this fishing website, you will probably agree that perch fishing is indeed a sport.
