sunshine policy 

the foreign policy of South Korea towards North Korea from 1998 until Lee Myung-bak's election to presidency in 2007.

The main aim of the policy was to soften North Korea's attitudes towards the South by encouraging interaction and economic assistance.

June 13 to 15, 2000: The first Inter-Korean Summit, between Kim Dae Jung and Kim Jong-il.

 


Oct 2, 2007: 2nd Summit was held as the South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun walked across the Korean DMZ and travelled on to Pyongyang for talks with Kim Joing-il. On October 4, 2007, Roh and Kim signed the peace declaration. 


2010s


March 26, 2010: Sinking of a South Korean naval vessel.
  the 1,500-ton ROKS Cheonan with a crew of 104, sank off Baengnyeong Island in the Yellow Sea. Out of 104 sailors, 46 died and 58 were rescued. 
 
May 20, 2010: Researchers claimed that the sinking had been caused by a North Korean torpedo; North Korea rejected the findings.

November 23, 2010: North Korea's artillery fired at South Korea's Yeonpyeong island in the Yellow Sea and South Korea returned fire. Two South Korean marines and two civilians were killed, more than a dozen were wounded, including three civilians. 

 

the Present 

Kim Jong-un; born 8 January 1983; is the supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and has been the "Great Successor" since Kim Jung-il's death. 

Jan 1, 2013: Kim delivered a New Year's Day message calling for a better relations with South Korea. 

 


Feb 24, 2013: Park Geun-hye was elected as the 18th president of South Korea.
