THE ISSUE
- Over a quarter (29%) of Canadian women have been assaulted by a spouse. 45% of women assaulted by a male partner suffered physical injury.
- Only 10% of sexual assaults on women are reported to the police - there are 509 860 reported and unreported sexual assaults in Canada a year
- That means every minute of every day, a woman or child in Canada is being sexually assaulted
- Two thirds of sexual assaults occur in a private home
WHO We are
- XXYX was founded in 2008 by a group of 5
- Started as a local support group for women that had been assaulted
- There are now 22 support centers across southern Ontario
- Provide prevention education of gender based violence
- Counselling and support groups for victims
WHO WE ARE (CONT)
- Each support center provides aid to a community of 500-3000 in population
- These small communities will develop a stronger sense of organization over time
- As a result, numerous self-governing communities will grow, and with the growth of community will be decreases in violence
