7 Tips for hiring
...or be hired
Tips for hiring
1. Be specific
Don’t leave anything to interpretation.
Contextualize.
Ex: What is seniority?.
2. Be fair
Do a clean technical test.
Do not live code.
No captious questions.
ALWAYS provide feedback.
3. Start with
cultural fitness
Depends on the position.
Attitude is harder to change.
Can disrupt a whole team.
4. Involve the team
Since day 1: crafting the offer.
At least 1> team engineer in every meeting.
Don't look
only
at the code artifact.
5. Be controversial
You want true reactions. A quick glance into authenticity.
State (yours or company) stances on something.
Don't fill silence/gaps.
6. Beware of red flags
There will be more.
No second chances.
Disrespect.
Not in time.
Not in form.
Tips for being hired
1. Be present
Look at the interviewers eyes.
Ask the hard questions from the beginning (compensation).
Don't hesitate.
2. Be smart
Write a cover letter (almost nobody does).
Explain the why. Sell the how.
Don’t use AI. Never. Ever.
3. Remove bluff
From your vocabulary, from your CV… from you!.
Don't fake values.
Don’t say anything that can’t be proved empirically.
4. Don't "be yourself"
Adapt to the company context.
Don’t bullshit.
Use true marketing: showcase your skills without hiding your flaws (own them).
5. Show respect
Focus on one process at a time.
Dedicate all your attention to the process.
Follow up.
6. Show interest
Research the company idiosyncrasy.
Go the extra mile.
Stay top of mind (Linkedin).
For both
7. Don’t give up
Don't cheat the process.
Don’t take rushed decisions.
Don’t lower your standards.
It will take time to find what you are looking for. Deal with it.
Thank you 🙏
