Information Processes Technology
What is Expedia?
-
Expedia is an internet based travel website.
- It allows the user to book hotels, airline tickets, car rentals, cruises, vacation packages and various attractions and services via the World Wide Web.
- The site uses multiple global distribution systems such as Amadeus or the Sabre reservation systems for flight and hotels.
And who are their competitors?
- Webjet - Travel booking site offering flights, hotel bookings and car hires.
-
Wotif - Provides a reservation service for hotels in Australia, as well as international hotels. Options for flights and holiday rentals are also available.
Is Expedia a batch or real time system or batch system?
Expedia immediately processes information entered by the customer
Expedia will confirm customer requests and respond to the customer by sending a receipt and confirmation.
Thus, for these reasons, Expedia must be considered a real time transaction processing system.
Evaluation of Expedia's current website
- Expedia's website is essential for stability and functionality of operations.
- Provides a range of booking procedures not offered on other sites - flights, hotels, car hire, other activities.
- Expedia utilises a number of advertisements to attract their customers.
- Offers insurance for security of flights - this is not offered by many other booking websites.
- Expedia exposes their customers to their whole. For example, they might advertise flights on the hotel page.
Design Features on Websites

Check Boxes
- Check boxes are small areas on a computer screen which, when selected by the user, shows that a particular features has been enabled.
- Check boxes are used to indicate stops, and which airlines one could fly with - very similar on other reservation websites.
Input Text Boxes
- An input text box, is a widget used to allow the user to input text information to be used by a program.
- Text boxes are used for a variety of purposes in other reservation systems.
- In Expedia and similar websites however, text boxes are often used to input flight data.
Radio Buttons
- A radio button is an icon representing one set of options, only on of which can be selected.
- Radio buttons will differ from site to site, however reservation systems will have similar radio buttons.
Colour
- Three different elements of colour - value, hue, saturation
- Hue - Refers to the pure state of a colour
- Value - Lightness or darkness of a colour
- Saturation - Brightness or dullness of a colour
- Most websites use a colour scheme - for e.g my prototype uses, white, blue and yellow.
- Colour helps to obtain attention and stimulate interests in ways that would be difficult by other means.
Data Validation and Verification
- Data Validation is the process of ensuring that data is correct, timely and up to date.
- Data Verification is the process of checking data for inaccuracies and consistency.
Drop Down Boxes
- A drop down box is a widget that allows the user to select one value from a list.
- Drop down menus are often used to choose the number of passengers or to choose the time in which the customer would like to fly.
Justification of chosen design
-
Expedia’s current website is confusing and cluttered.
-
My prototype aims to arrange the content of the home page in a logical sequence.
- My prototype is suitable for those who
have difficulty in utilising modern technology, aiding them in transitioning from a paper based environment to an online environment.
-
I have chosen this design also so that proficient users are still able to navigate around the page as they usually would.
