Music Video Theories

Michael Shore

What does the theorist state?

The theorist Michael Shore states that he believes that music videos are only aimed at particular audiences.

Shore believes that music videos often used RECYCLED images and styles that simply appeals to adolescent males and their fantasies of SPEED, POWER, GIRLS & WEALTH.

Occasionally, Shore believes that this can lead to the music videos becoming soft-core pornography with stereotypical representations.

How can these theories be applied to the music videos you have found?

WHISTLE - Flo Rida

This music video contains elements of this theory as it is objectifying towards women and is appealing to the teenage male audience through the use of costume and body language. Throughout the video, the women are wearing bikinis and the camera is panning up and down them to show their bodies off to the people watching. The video also shows the way in which men objectify women and

he thinks he has enough control over her to just be able

to take photos of her whenever he wants. The end of the

music video shows them at a party, showing the rich

lifestyle of a male rapper.

WORK FROM HOME - Fifth Harmony

Within this music video, the five girls are shown to be wearing clothes that show off their figures and a lot of flesh to the audience. The actions they use are ones that distract the workers from their job showing the way that women use there bodies to entice male audiences to watch them. The combination of workers distracted by the women walking past and sexualised dancing. This is often seen from the female dancers within music videos and within this one, the women are heavily made up which you would not see on an actual construction site, proving that the video is aiming to impress the male audiences watching.

How will your understanding of these theories affect the production of your own music video?

My understanding of this theory will affect the production  of our own music video as I now see that a lot of music videos do follow the target audience of adolescent males. I see this through the way many of them wear revealing clothes at some point and their body language is suggestive. Also, the use of showing off wealth and power is common within music videos so I think we should try and incorporate this into out music video.

After watching music videos by both male and females, I believe that this theory is really relevant to modern audiences and that the use of sexualised females and objectifying them by saying they are only good for one thing and taking more control over their bodies than they do.
