Evaluation 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

In order to secure an audience for my product I had to first determine a genre which I would create my product based on. After concluding that pop and sub pop genres would be the chosen category for my product, I began to build my research around this genre, looking at who my audience was and how I could attract them to my product.
From an obvious perspective, I knew that my audience would be people interested in pop and sub pop genres of music, but, I then had to establish means of determining who these people were and what would interest them. I began by setting an age group for this. I decided to target my product towards age 16 to 20 as I felt pop and sub pop genres, particularly the sub pop genres, would appeal to young adults and teenagers. This age group is quite a well suited group as I feel, not only do I fit into this group and have knowledge of the genre and of people my age who are interested in this genre, but the age group encapsulates a variety of different stages of maturity, teens and young adults.

I then began to move away from speculative methods of profiling and began to create and distribute surveys to people within this age group in an effort to develop first hand reliable research from the age group. Using Survey monkey I was able to make my own questionnaire and then print it for distribution. Then, gathering the results I placed them into an audience profile which can be found on my blog and used the found information to help develop my product.

The information gave me an insight into the genders most associated with the genre amongst other things, important information when competing in such a competitive market. Developing from this research, I created reader profiles which gave me closer in depth information into individuals who fit into my genre. These personal profiles allowed a refinement in my idea of potential audiences and those who may take an interest or purchase my product.

Whist creating my product I wanted to ensure my audiences had input on what they liked and disliked about my product, allowing them to better refine the product to something that appealed to them. I regularly received feedback which can be seen throughout my drafts (included it here so the progression of my product could be seen more chronologically) and allowed me to ensure I included and removed things which my audience wanted, not me. This allowed me to create a successful targeted media product.

My final focus group was done to ensure I had created the successful product I believed I had. I completed the focus group with the intent on learning whether my audience was happy with the finished product and if they enjoyed, disliked or wanted to purchased the product for any particular reason. I feel the final results were all very positive and the interview confirmed that both male and female audiences were interested in my product.

With all of the information I had collected I was then able to define who my primary and secondary audience was, information of which can be found on my blogger amongst the other information previously mentioned in this evaluation.

Overall through the research of my potential target audience I was able to determine that my primary audience consisted mainly of females, information based on my surveys, who fit into the age 16-20 category. My secondary audience was similar although largely smaller, consisting of males which make up a much smaller percentage of my audience. Both primary and secondary have a number of similarities and differences so creating a product to cater for both was fairly easy despite the fact my product had a much larger female viewing. The work I created was based hugely on my audience and what they wanted, meaning I was able to attract the correct audience by allowing them to have a lot of input themselves.
