DYER'S STAR THEORY

He says stars are made for money purposes alone, and that they increase the band identity, benefiting the institution as they become a household name, increasing sales on all media platforms. The institution then models their artist on what the target audience want/expect.

This has been achieved with Lady Gaga, who has been modeled around a fashion inclined audience, so the audience can relate to her and also her music.

We have done this by making Casey Tyler and the rest of the band very quirky and edgy, appealing to what our target audience expect an indie pop artist to be like. We also used her modern, aesthetic fashion sense to relate to a more modern, edgy audience.

There is a hegemony where audiences can relate to the star because they have a feature they share or admire with the star, which enhances their 'star quality'.

An example of this would be Lady Gaga tweeting frequently about issues and expects her fans to engage with that discourse just as much as she expects them to listen to her music. She also presents herself as working for her fans, making her seem like a more authentic person.

We have created this 'star quality' in Casey Tyler specifically, with her LGBT+ rights activism presented on the website via news links. We also used lots of beauty shots in the music video to promote her as an artist, creating a sense of voyeurism between her and the audience. In other words, they see beauty shots of Casey Tyler and aspire to be like her.
