Evaluation Question 5
"How did you attract/address your audience?"

Who?

Our target audience is the young generation of teenagers and young adults. Within this presentation, I will explain how we decided we would attract our target audience, primarily consisting of males, through mise en scene, sound, camera work and editing.

1st Shot

In terms of sound, Reggie is going to have an asthma attack, however we decided to exaggerate the sound he makes in order to make it sound like something else. This shot contains comedic, sexual connotations which is what merely appeals to young males as their characters tend to be mischievous and naughty.

2nd Shot

This shot also has sexual connotations which appeals to the primary male audience. The comedic elements of this shot also attract the secondary teenage female audience.

3rd Shot

This shot invites the male audience as conventionally speaking, they tend to be the most of whom have a nonchalant attitude towards education in comparison to females.

4th Shot

In terms of mise en scene, the Spiderman outfit invites the younger generation of children, widening our target market. However, the spiderman costume will predominantly appeal to male children. This also invites our primary and secondary target audience as all teenagers have rivalries with their siblings.

5th Shot

In terms of mise en scene, his facial expressions and clothes attract the male nerd-like teenager primary audience as they can relate to what he wears. The non-diagetic, heaven-like sound in the background portrays his perfectionist attitude to how and what he wears.

6th Shot

In terms of mise en scene, Reggie seems very determined to start riding the bike to go to school. His eager behaviour appeals to the 'nerdy' male teenage target audience as they enjoy the educational element of school, like Reggie, not the social aspects.

7th Shot

The motorbike in the background undermines Reggie's form of transport, minimising his character and making him seem more nerdy. However, a lot of young males ride their bikes to school, therefore they can relate to Reggie.

8th Shot

This shot appeals to all teenagers. This is because everyone has that one crush, who they are reluctant to confront about their feelings. Reggie fancies the one popular girl he believes is out of his league, which many nerds experience, not just in films.

9th Shot

In terms of mise en scene, this attracts the 'nerdy' male target audience through Reggie's reaction to the protagonist's (Brody, the jock) presence. All nerds know a guy at school who picks on people, if not them, to make themselves feel bigger and confident.

10th Shot

All unpopular teenagers aspire to be similar to the one popular guy who is athletic and gains a lot of attention. However, the majority are unaware of their backgrounds (Brody lives in a council flat) and struggles to make ends met, financially. He picks on children at school as he is neglected at home and is opinion is not valued. Some of our target audience can appeal to this shot as they may be able to relate to the problems Reggie is faced with.

11th Shot

As you can see, Reggie doesn't enjoy his life. This appeals to our target market as it makes them want to carry on watching to see how he deals with his issues. Do things get better for him? Does he get the girl of his dreams? How does he survive? Do the bullies do anything else to him? The audience will be faced with these questions at the end of the opening, urging them to carry on watching.
