What Is The Purpose Of A Digipak?

What is a digipak?

  • A digipak is a type of packaging for CD's and DVD's.
  • A digipak allows the audience's inclusion on more information about the band/artist.
  • It encourages the audience to spend on something 'extra' and special as a way to feel closer to the band/artist.
  • A digipak plays on our love of music and of the particular artist.

What does the outside of a digipak look like?

  • Track listing in the same font as artist/album name.
  • Production info- copyright, year of production, web address, record company, distributor, producer.
  • Promotional sticker - drawing attention to upcoming tour or special featured artists.
  • Artist's name - large, clear font which is easy to read and will remain in the same font throughout all the ancillary work.

Image of artist(s)?

The image you decide to use of your artist must complement the colour scheme of the album cover and the style of the artist. E.g. Rihanna has taken a dark theme with the heavy make up which can be seen through the black and white filter. The image complements the black and white use of text.

Overall digipak style?

  • 3-4 colours maximum- colours must complement eachother.
  • No more than 2 different fonts- must also complement each other.
  • Include elements of graphic design- not images lifted from the video. (Remember, this is NOT a form of advertisement for the video. It is for the whole album).
  • Visual link with advertisement must be clear.

What should the inside look like?

The visual style of the inside of your digipak should look very similar and should complement the front of your digipak, with regards to the colour, the design, the font.

Acknowledgements should also be included in very small font- acknowledgements for particular tracks on the album.

A repeat of the track list is sometimes included. But with more info about the length, songwriters and producers.

What should the advertisement look like?

  • Must include:
  • Release date if not released yet.
  • Some feature an image of the digipak itself which this one has done.
  • Prominent display of artist's and album's name.
  • Repeat same graphic style as digipak.
  • Might include:
  • Review quotes from newspapers and magazines.
  • Tour dates.
  • Record label logo.
  • Website.
