Isaiah 41:21-29

Isaiah 41:21 “Present your case,” the LORD says.
         “Bring forward your strong arguments,”
         The King of Jacob says.
     22    Let them bring forth and declare to us what is going to take place;
         As for the former events, declare what they were,
         That we may consider them and know their outcome.
         Or announce to us what is coming;
     23    Declare the things that are going to come afterward,
         That we may know that you are gods;
         Indeed, do good or evil, that we may anxiously look about us and fear together.
     24    Behold, you are of no account,
         And your work amounts to nothing;
             He who chooses you is an abomination.

   25   “I have aroused one from the north, and he has come; From the rising of the sun he will call on My name; And he will come upon rulers as upon mortar, Even as the potter treads clay.”
   26   Who has declared this from the beginning, that we might know? Or from former times, that we may say, “He is right!”? Surely there was no one who declared, Surely there was no one who proclaimed, Surely there was no one who heard your words.
   27 “Formerly I said to Zion, ‘Behold, here they are.’ And to Jerusalem, ‘I will give a messenger of good news.’
   28 “But when I look, there is no one, And there is no counselor among them Who, if I ask, can give an answer.
   29 Behold, all of them are false; Their works are worthless, Their                  molten images are wind and emptiness.

Isaiah 44:28–45:4: “It is I who says of Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd! And he will perform all My desire.’ And he declares of Jerusalem, ‘She will be built,’ And of the temple, ‘Your foundation will be laid. 45:1 Thus says the Lord to Cyrus His anointed, Whom I have taken by the right hand, To subdue nations before him And to loose the loins of kings; To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: 2 “I will go before you and make the rough places smooth; I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars. 3…So that you may know that it is I, The Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name. 4 “For the sake of Jacob My servant, And Israel My chosen one, I have also called you by your name; I have given you a title of honor though you have not                        known Me.’ ”

The Fulfillment

Ezra 1:2–4 – 2 “This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: “ ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. 3 Any of his people among you may go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem, and may their God be with them. 4 And in any locality where survivors may now be living, the people are to provide them with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with freewill offerings for the temple of God in Jerusalem.”

The Fulfillment

Psalm 22:1 "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people.   7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads.       8 “He trusts in the Lord,” they say, “let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him…. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. 15 My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. 16 Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. 17 All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. 18 They divide my clothes among them and                  cast lots for my garments....

Is This Important for Me?

“What is an idol? It is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give… An idol is whatever you look at and say, in your heart of hearts, ‘If I have that, then I’ll feel my life has meaning, then I ‘ll know I have value, then I’ll feel significant and secure.” There are many ways to describe that kind of relationship to something, but perhaps the best one is worship.” --Tim Keller, Counterfeit Gods
