Focus on the One Who Saves

“The central focus of these verses…is upon God. This is what Isaiah has been appealing. Whenever Israel focuses primarily upon her [felt] needs she is in difficulty, for supply of those needs becomes the ultimate goal and all else, including the Sovereign of the universe, becomes but a means to that end. This attitude is a sure prescription for spiritual disaster.” --John Oswalt on Isaiah 12

“If I stand before [Jesus] as a cup waiting to be filled with [felt needs], I will never feel quite full. Why? First, because my lusts are boundless; by their very nature they can’t be filled. Second, because Jesus does not intend to satisfy my selfish desires. Instead, he intends to break the cup of [felt needs], and not fill it.”

Gratitude is Vital

“Thus praise and thanks are essential to robust spiritual life, not because God needs them like some neurotic tyrant, but because we need to give them. It is only in this way that we can refocus our attention upon how much we have received from a loving Father and in that appreciation stop attempting to use him as our servant (idolatry).”

--John Oswalt on Isaiah 12

“Dr. Hans Seyle, considered one of the pioneers of stress research wrote, ‘Nothing erases unpleasant thoughts more effectively than conscious concentration on pleasant ones.’ That’s why if I could bottle gratitude, I would. Gratitude helps direct your attention toward positive feelings and away from negative ones, and the benefits of feeling and expressing gratitude far outweigh almost all the medications I prescribe, without any side effects.

Focusing on gratitude has been found to increase the parasympathetic nervous system; improve depression, stress, and happiness; reduce stress among caregivers; …significantly decrease anxiety and depression as well as increase…life satisfaction."

--Dr. Daniel G. Amen, Conquer Worry and Anxiety

“When you make a habit of bringing your attention to the things you’re grateful for, you enhance how your brain works. So, the next time you’re feeling stressed or anxious, take a minute to write down three things—big or small—you’re grateful for. While you’re at it, get in the habit of writing down the name of one person whom you appreciate and why; then share your feelings with that person with a quick e-mail, text or call. Do this once a week and try not to repeat anyone for two months.

Or, better yet, write a 300-word essay about someone you are grateful for…. Then…make an appointment with that person and read the essay aloud to him or her. Research has shown that doing this significantly increases life satisfaction scores and happiness and decreases symptoms of depression.”
