Wearable Art is an elective course that focuses on implementing 3D techniques and materials to the human body in creative, expressive and kinetic ways. The outcomes generated will encompass and intersect between Making, Context, Kinesthetics and Aesthetics.
Through a series of recommended readings, references, weekly in-class exercises and classroom discussions will trigger and generate ideas that can be visually, physically and kinesthetically applied to the human body that will be considered as an empty ‘canvas’. You are encouraged to use these readings, visual research, weekly explorations and experimentations in materials and techniques to support your practical work and to consider fragments of them as starting points or context for your project. In a series of making workshops you will be introduced to materials and techniques that will specifically focus on various parts of the body, you will be required to experiment and explore in these workshops to find unique and creative ways in expressing possibilities of the human body as an empty ‘canvas’ that is paradoxically static and dynamic.
This course aims to discover the qualities and potentials of 3D art practice through abstract interpretation, representation and aesthetics via the human body as an alternative to space. Furthermore, you will be exposed to relevant making techniques, material properties and potentials, experiments and explorations with the human body to give form to your ideas and present them through a series of images and/or videos documentation as well as a short physical installation/performance for the One Night Only showcase.

The class of Wearable Art AY23/24 will be required to produce a wearable art piece referencing and translating Bother Joseph McNally's work.
The aim of this theme is to celebrate the 100years of Brother Joseph McNally and the wearable art piece is to be featured in LASALLE's Centenary Celebrations.
Wearable Artists are to research, study, reference and translate Brother Joseph McNally/s. Here is an online collection on some of his works. It is encouraged to look into various sources of information and news related to him and observe his works physically, they can be found within LASALLE Campus.
Look into the materials he used, forms expressed, textures imprinted or techniques implemented to use as starting points for the work.
Artists are to then present and propose their ideas before the execution and production of work.

Is textile the same as fabric?
They range from fibers woven together to a finished product, ready for use. In addition, fabric is still under the textile umbrella. So in other words, you can make fabric and textiles from the same materials.

words of wisdom
Going around museums and galleries, seeing films, talking to people, seeing new shops, looking at silly magazines, taking an interest in the activities of people in the street, looking at art, travelling: all these things are not useful, all these things do not help me, do not give me any direct stimulation to help my search for something new. And neither does fashion history. The reason for that is that all these things above already exist.
I only can wait for the chance for something completely new to be born within myself.
The way I go about looking for this from within is to start with a provisional ‘theme’. I make an abstract image in my head. I think paradoxically (oppositely) about patterns I have used before. I put parts of patterns where they don’t usually go. I break the idea of ‘clothes’. I think about using for everything what one would normally use for one thing. Give myself limitations. I pursue a situation where I am not free. I think about a world of only the tiniest narrowest possibilities. I close myself. I think that everything about the way of making clothes hitherto is no good. This is the rule I always give myself: that nothing new can come from a situation that involves being free or that doesn’t involve suffering.
In order to make this SS14 collection, I wanted to change the usual route within my head. I tried to look at everything I look at in a different way. I thought a way to do this was to start out with the intention of not even trying to make clothes. I tried to think and feel and see as if I wasn’t making clothes.

Structural integrity is the study of the safe design and assessment of components and structures under load, and has become increasingly important in engineering design. It integrates aspects of stress analysis, materials behaviour and the mechanics of failure into the engineering design process.
