Evaluation Question 1
FOLLOW THE ARROWS
Carol studied editting and camerawork closely in music videos. She observed that edits in music videos come much more frequently than in films. This is to keep the audience entertained and watching the music video. Also the edits in a music video have rhythmic basis closely connected to the song. This is reflected in our video is the fast motion of the sparklers.
Our music video links to Vernallis views in many different ways, in our music videos we broke the rules of continuity editing in order to draw attention to what is on the screen. This helps to keep the audience entertained so they can keep watching. Jump cuts are often used while editing. My media product also includes camera moving in time with the music. Carol also talks about the importance of the use of base tracks in the edit which we included in my media product.
Carol also mentions base track giving music videos a structure. In our music video, when the chorus comes we have the artist singing and on the other verses of the song we will have more of the artist with her friend have fun together. This means that whenever the chorus comes we go back to the base one or the same base track.
Versailles says music videos are produced in response to the song and lyric, therefore the song should reflect the lyrics. Furthermore, for my music video although its a song about love we were able to interpret relationship as a friendship instead. This interpretation was successful as we had parts of the lyrics that when with the video. For example 'i love to walk away, turn my back...'
CAROL VERSALLIS SAYS THAT ALL VIDEOS FOLLOW THE SIMILAR EDITING TECHNIQUES
Most music videos include many techniques here are two examples:
Movement of the Camera
Fast Motion / slow motion at the beginning
Andrew Goodwin feels that traditional narrative analyses does not really apply to pop videos .This is because it is just that they approach narrative from a different angle to novels and films.
My media product links to Goodwin's theory as Renee was both a narrator and a character the music video. My music video has visual pleasure, for example when both girls are in the closed smoked room, also the red water fountains towards the end of the music video. This encourages people to keep watching. However from Goodwins three types of relations between songs and videos my music my media product has Amplification as in the original music video its about a relationship whereas we have changed the message to a friendship. Disjunction is alright one of the three, as our video contradicts the lyrics and there is very little connection between the lyrics and our music video.
Goodwin also talks about the singer in music videos is usually both the narrator and the character. Also, the singer tends to look directly at the camera; this involves the viewer at with the performance. Our artist does both as she sings and has scenes having fun with her friend.
Goodwin mentions the artists image and how its an important aspect. He states that a star image should be very unique in terms of how the artist is presented, through what she wears, the way they move and their appearance For example Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj ect. Therefore, our music video goes slightly against this part of Goodwins theory as we have our artist wear casual clothing/ black, white and grey. This is because we felt it was important for her to connect with her audience, we also wanted be known for her simplicity. However we did change her costume according to the location, for example we had her wearing all white in the smokey room so that she would stand out with the neon colours around her.
The first music video that has influenced my music video was 'Nobody Like You' by Stigma. The aspect of the video that has influenced me was the two girls having fun throughout that music video. We decided to use the convention of the music video, we had Renee (the artist) and her best friend.
Another music video that has also influenced my media product was 'Preach' by M.O. This was mainly because of the outfits the girls wore in the music video and the colour coordination. These are some music videos that have inspired some of our ideas.
My media products challenges some of the conventions of real media products.
We have challenged forms and conventions in our music video. Renee, the artist, is in the music video however in deep house music video the artist isn't usually in the music video. For example, stigma and disclosure. However, we had our artist in the music video and digipak as we did now want to create barrier between the audience and the artist .
We also challenged conventions as our song was mainly about love but as it could be interpreted in many ways so we decided to have our narrative based on a friendship shared between the artist and her friend.
Challenging Conventions
The front cover of my digipak has the name of my artist written with a line across. This is similar to Blonde & Disclosure as they also have their name on the album which is their logo aswell.
My digipak has Renne on the front cover. This emphasises that it is her music and she is the main artist. However as she's a new artist its important for her face to be clearly shown so that her new audience know her.
These digipaks a similar to mine as we have these female artists on the centre front album cover. Although our artists genre is deep house I've still looked for inspirations from pop artists such as Alesha Dixon, Iggy Azalea and Beyonce. Most female pop singers have albums with themselves on the album covers because it emphasises independence and female authority.
My website has clear visual links with the music video and the digipak as I was able to add images from some filming sessions and also the music video itself. I used some darks colours such as grey and black this was inspired by the black and grey clothing Renee wears. It was also influenced by Disclosure who are a deep house duo. The home page includes pictures of Renee and her friend, key dates of upcoming performances and also the music video. Many artists include the music video on the home page in order to attract the audience to the latest song, also to let those who don't know that the artist has produced a new song.
These are some example of websites, these are similar to my website as dark/mute colours are used with some images. These websites are all promoting something, Disclosure promoting their new song 'Nocturnal' ft.The weeknd, Little mix promoting their album 'Get weird' and Beyonce promoting Martin Luther King Day. However, my website is also promoting our new album 'I Loved You'.
