Life Advice

College is about learning to be an adult

  • Think about what you want in life
    • Start making decisions that get you there
    • I recommend reading The Defining Decade

  • People are more important than what you do
    • Be respectful to people
    • Actively try to build empathy
    • Listen more than you talk
    • Prioritize in-person interactions over remote ones

Passion is important, but Discipline is more important

  • Go to all of your classes
  • Build a routine and stick to it

  • Find those habits that can only improve your life
    • Reading
    • Working out

  • Turn fidget time into something productive
    • E.g. I replaced Reddit with Duolingo

Become a Professional

  • Most professions are some type of problem solving
    • 90% of problems you'll ever encounter have been solved before
    • The remaining 10% of problems are the valuable ones to solve

  • How do you know if a problem has been solved before?
    • Read a lot. Then read more.
    • As a rule of thumb: Read 10 times as much as you write

  • Turn your "unknown unknowns" into "known unknowns" as quickly as possible
    • Learn about all the common problems in your field
    • Only learn the solutions when they become relevant
