Who is a good captian?

Option 2: Does not do any of it. You'll mostly see the captain standing and talking to people. If the captain is missing for a week, no one will really notice

Who is a good captian?

If you are busy doing everyone else's job,

1. you will never have time to do you job and

2. others will never get better at their jobs

A good boss is hands off leadership.

A good boss has the right systems in place to ensure he/she can monitor the performance of the people who report to them

A good boss is some one who makes sure that their reportees can function independently without their constant input

Motivation

Paid enough that they are not concerned about basic needs

Not insecure about their job

Feels part of the team

Feels proud / has ownership

Help them grow

Make people feel important, spend some time.

Thank people, ensure you are regularly thanking your reportee for their great work.
1:1s are great

informal, non work related conversation - you can do this during your commute (or other such times) if you like.
Get a coffee/tea/drink with someone

Reviews

Most times we focus on things that need to be improved, but then it feels like we don't appreciate the good parts.

This just leads to lower motivation and never get them to try new things.

Focus on the things the person is good at and appreciate them for that and thank them.

- be supportive

- listen to what they have to say

- ask them what will they do to next time

About things that did not go well

- Ideally don't tell how it can be better next time,

but ask first for their opinion,

they will have thought about this and if there are still some pointers left, you can provide them but ensure they feel heard and acknowledge the effort they put into thinking about how to improve the process

 - Need to be supportive about the not so great things eg: I know it did not work out - but it will be better next time.
