  • I am Priyanka Saggu :)

  • Currently, I'm working as a DevOps Engineer @Atlanhq.   

  • Soon, I'm joining Red Hat as a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) in their global OpenShift Dedicated team.

  • I'm an Outreachy'19 alumna @GNOME Foundation (December'19 - March'20).

  • During the internship, I worked on the GNOME application, GNOME Translation Editor.

  • And yes, I am still in the very process of learning & exploring my ways.

Project: GNOME Translation Editor

  • I've worked on revamping few of the existing widgets of the application, in accordance with GNOME Human Interface Guidelines (HIG).
  • As my Outreachy project, I worked on entirely redesigning the old search and replace bar dialog to a new sliding overlay style custom widget, using libdazzle library.

 

Formerly known as Gtranslator, GNOME Translation Editor is an enhanced gettext po file editor for the GNOME desktop environment. It handles all forms of gettext po files and includes a bundle of useful features like Find/Replace, Translation Memory, Different Translator's Profiles, Messages Table (for having an overview of the translations/messages in the po file), & Easy Navigation and Editing of translation messages.

What is Outreachy?

Outreachy is an Open Source Opportunity!

It's an initiative to provide people, with an opportunity to learn, explore, get mentored and contribute back to the Open Source and Free Softwares!

How it works?

  • Outreachy provides remote internships!
  • Outreachy supports diversity in open source and free software!
  • Outreachy internships are 3 months long. Interns are paid an internship stipend of $5,500 USD. Interns have a $500 USD travel stipend to attend conferences or events.
  • During the internship, Interns work with experienced mentors from open source communities.

  • Outreachy internship projects may include programming, user experience, documentation, illustration, graphical design,  data science, project marketing, user advocacy, or community event planning.

                                                                                                                           

Who is Eligible?

How these programs are beneficial for students?

  • You get to have (a) mentor/mentors.
  • They not only guide you technically, but also show you how you should (or could) navigate your way in the field that you’re interested in.     
  • You learn skills! Depending upon the project, these might be programming skills, documentation (writing) skills, designing, or management skills.
  • But most importantly, you learn the most important ones, i.e. Communication & Collaboration!
  • You get to join a network of past interns, mentors, organisers & so many others!
  • And of course, you have monetary compensation. So, you get paid too!

How to get started?

  • Participate in Open Source Communities (In my case, I was a part of DGPLUG).
  • Look around yourself, in your machines (laptops/desktops) what softwares you use. Start by contributing back to them.
  • Join their public forums. But how would you get to know about the forums? Internet -> Official websites!
  • Contribute. But how?
  • Raise issues, fix typos, improve documentations, if you can write code, then add patches. If nothing, just participate in the discussion & learn!
  • Discuss your interests with the people!
  • Ask for help, but politely and respectfully & give other people their time & space.
  • Seek people for mentorship. But go back and show your efforts too.

You *can't crack* anything!

You have to go through the process & *earn it*!

  • Don't hesitate to Apply. JUST APPLY!
  • Give your best possible efforts & amount of time!
  • Never hesitate to ask people. Talk to them, share your concerns!
  • Share what you're thinking about the program, the project or absolutely anything!
  • Just ask people if they could help you or you could help them back in some way. That build warm networks!
  • Never take your opportunities forgranted!
  • Don't procastinate to apply. Just start talking to your mentors and putting your efforts!
