Theorists of Music Videos

Text

Here,I'm going to present the music video theorists through a music video namely,Roar  by Katy Perry and a thousand years by

Christina Perri

Andrew Goodwin(music video:Roar by Katy Perry)

Andrew Goodwin identified many aspects of a music video.Firstly,he identified the relationship

between the music and visuals. He believed that the music video can promote the song by the

analysis of lyrics. For example,if there's a word 'jump' in the music video, and in the music video the actors are actually jumping. Secondly,he believed that its important for an artist to be involved in the music video by performing or acting. A good example of this is Roar by Katy Perry.

Katy Perry is the main actor in this video and by her amazing acting she has tried her best to make  the video really realistic. Moreover, Andrew also explained the star image being  a vital aspect aspect of the music video where he/she makes the music video  look more appealing to the audience. The star image is always very unique for example the way he/she shows the costumes, moves and appearance.

Sven E Carlsson(Music video: Roar By Katy Perry)

He believed that the music video can be categorized  in black and white boxes. It can be seen as binary opposites as an the opposite of the other.

In this music video,

two different lifestyles

are clearly seen,the

fantasy world where

she's enjoying and excited about the animals and the lifestyle.

Carlsson also believed that the music video should have performance(more dance) and it

should have the concept too. In the performance, the music video should be particularly

focused on the artist in some way.

Michael Shore(music video:Roar by Katy Perry)

He believed that music videos contain views of:

  • Male Fantasies
  • Information overload
  • Cliched Imagery
  • Recycled tools

These elements are not in this music video.

Andrew Goodwin(music video:A thousand years)

In this music video, the lyrics and visuals are related to eachother as we can see that Christina is being focused and the actress she's telling the story is about is being focused too.The music video includes a love story and Christina sings and tells that both Kristan Stewart and Robert Pattison love eachother. The lyrics of the music clearly tells us that if you love someone, you truly love them, you cant be afraid to love and you have to be brave. The video shows their time spent together.

Steve Archer(music video: Roar by Katy Perry)

Steve Archer says that there's a strong relationship between Narrative and Performance

in a music video.

In this music video,we can clearly see that the

narrative is referring to the performance. In start it shows

Katy Perry being downtrodden because of a

relationship she is in but then becomes empowered

as the story progresses. At the end she's happy and

strong and is not being controlled anymore.

So thats why the narrative and Performance are related to eachother.

John Stewart(music video: Roar by Katy Perry

John Stewart states that the music video can be made perfect if it includes close ups, lighting

being focused on star's face.He says that the music video should have an intertexuality, using

something which with the audience is familiar. There are many close ups of Katy Perry throughout the music video, this is because it emphasises  who the main actor is within the music video. The mis en scene in this music video used is perfect. The editing, special effects with the tiger, use of fades, animations has made this music video seem like a movie.

Laura Mulvey(Roar by Katy Perry)

Text

Laura Mulvey

believed that

women are only

used as sexual

objects in the music videos.

She says that the camera only tends to focus more on their body parts. In this

music video,Katy Perry is wearing less clothes so this music video would

have more male gaze.
