Romeo Montague

Romeo is a romantic, love sick teenager who is quick to fall in love. He has no desire to be a part of the feud between the families. Romeo is rash and often makes decisions without thinking them through,

Juliet Capulet

Juliet is a 13 year old girl at the onset of the play.  She is very obedient to her family until she meets Romeo.  Juliet is easily swayed and is also quick to act without thinking.

Benvolio Montague

Benvolio is Romeo's cousin.  He is the peace keeper in the play who tries very hard to keep the peace, but always seems to fail.

Tybalt Capulet

Tybalt, also known as the Prince of Cats, is Juliet's cousin and the foil character to Benvolio.  Tybalt is the trouble maker and is full of vengeance and hatred.

Mercutio

Mercutio is Romeo's best friend. He is a kinsman to Prince Escalus and is the jokester in the play.  Mercutio is the foil character to Romeo; he doesn't take anything very seriously and often makes fun of romeo for his "love sick" ways.  

Friar Lawrence

Friar Lawrence is a neutral character who decides to perform the marriage rite for Romeo and Juliet in hopes of turning their "households rancor to pure love."  It can be argued that Friar Lawrence is a key component for the events that occur that ultimately lead to the young lovers' suicide.

nurse

Nurse to Juliet, she has raised Juliet from birth because during this time mother's of nobility did not raise their children. The Nurse is one of the only characters besides Friar Lawrence who is aware of the love affair and marriage or Romeo and Juliet .

Prince Escalus

Prince Escalus is the Prince of Verona.  He is fed up with the feud and constant fighting between the Capulets and the Montagues.  

Paris

Paris is kinsman to Prince Escalus also.   He wants to marry Juliet and pushes Lord Capulet to hasten a marriage between them.
