MY FIRST EXPERIENCE AT

WORKING FROM HOME

Live where you work

Work where you live

Most people chose their home location near their work, where they can save time commuting, maybe sleep a little bit more or even lunch at home.

And that's fine. But if you could choose any place to live, would you make the same choice? Why do we make the choice of our home near the job and not the other way around?

I lived in Lisbon for about 4 years, and the only thing that kept me there was my job.
Recently I've decided to move south to a much calm city near the beach, away from the traffic, noise and polution.

In this short presentation I talk about the pros and cons of working from home.

    THE PROS

    NO TRAFFIC

    Forget about money.

Time is one the most precious assets you can have. I'm not going to tell you how much time I was spending while commuting, but it wasn't that much and I hated!

When I sum up the total for a week, or a month, or a year... It couldn't go on. I just had to change that.

    Eat at home

Less eating out means saving money.
Even if you haven't prepared anything, you'll probably find anything on the fridge.

And you can eat on the sofa while
    watching The Big Bang Theory.

    Coffee break

When there's time for that, there's the
    possibility to
     take coffee break.

Of course, you can also do it on
your workplace, but if you live
in Lagos, you can do it on the beach!

    confort

Working from home it's a completely
    different confort. You can work
in PJs, you can choose your
    desktop (aka couch, bed,

    floor, or whatever suites you).

    And, you don't have to
wait for the WC to clear out.

    The CONS

    team

    You go from this...

    "NO" TEAM

    ... to this.

    Believe me,
    it is NOT the same.

Being present and having presence are completely different things. You can't simulate that.

    degradation of Social skills

    If
    you
    run
    with
    wolves,
    you
    will
    learn
    how
    to
    howl.

    Distractions

It's not easy to stay focused.
You need a lot of discipline to keep the momentum.

When you work alone, the awareness of your procrastination
is highly present. And although at the office, with your fellow workers, you have these and other distractions,
it's easy to stay focused when everyone around you
is working for the same goal.

    Pressure

When you have a bad day at work you still have the sensation of accomplishment. You drove to work, attended meetings, take care of some stuff... you actually did some tasks.

When you work from home and you have a bad day, it feels like you've done nothing!
Maybe you had to start something from scratch because it wasn't done properly the first time, and when the workday is over and you're still on the same spot... it's a terrible feeling.

    resolutions

    • Human interactions are important
    • Cheering yourself it's hard when you're alone
    • Change your working methods if you feel that you're not that commited (e.g. The Pomodoro Technique)
    • Working full-time, 9 to 5, from work, alone... SUCKS! I work perfectly from home, but without a timetable.
