PALM MUTE/PERCUSSIVE STRUMMING

Instead of stopping on a rest, you can also "strum through" notes using muted strings to create a desired string noise.

Two most effective mute/rest methods:

PALM MUTE OVER SOUND HOLE

"LOOSE" FINGERS OVER STRINGS ON NECK

* Palm mute allows for more control over accents/texture of strums

* Fingers on strings provides more strumming hand freedom

PALM MUTE/PERCUSSIVE STRUMMING

Try out the rhythm below using the chords shown. Try switching mute methods or changing chords once you feel comfortable with the rhythm.

MEASURE PUSH/PULL

Another way to make your strumming and chord progressions more interesting is to "push" or "pull" chords out of the first beat of a bar.

Try out different chords; for the second example, exchange the eighth rest for a muted strum.

Harmonies and octave

Harmony

From the Latin harmonia meaning joining, concord, and from the Greek harmos meaning joint.

The combination of three or more sounds in a manner that produces a musically consistent, agreeable, pleasing whole.

Harmony, associations:  Accompaniment, chords, triads, seventh chords, chorale style

Octaves

Many musical scales in the West use eight notes. The distance between the first and eighth note is called an octave. This octave distance can be broken down into 12 semitones (on a guitar, each fret is one semitone.) ... Also: playing any note an octave higher will double it's frequency vibration rate.

1) Warm-up: Practice major scale pattern (5x forward and backward), along with "Are You Sleeping" tab a couple of times

2) Play arpeggio patterns as explained at the end of level 8.  Do each one at least ten times.

3) Play through tab and chords for "Getting Into You" shown below. Repeat until you can play the tab at any speed, and the chords until you can count to four and switch effectively.

G MAJOR SCALE

This is a "G major scale" because the root note (also called the "tonic") is a G.

MAJOR SCALE

Try playing through this pattern, starting with the first #1 note on the low E string.

Are You Sleeping?

(or “Where is Thumpkin?”)

Use the major scale to navigate through the tab.  Think of each note as a “rung” of a ladder, going up and down the pattern.

ARPEGGIO

some "rules":

begin with the root note

pick eighth notes on higher strings

return to the root note on the 1 count

tips:

keep your pinky finger rested just below the strings (on the pick guard, if you have one) for improved stability

pick lightly, and don't let the pick go beyond the next string

Guitar Stuff for 3.3.20

*Before practicing anything this week, it's highly recommended that you review the basic chord shapes in levels 3, 5, 6, and 7 tabs. You want to be familiar with E and A major, the C family, the G family, and D minor!

1) Warm-up:
Practice 7th chords using "TV chord" patterns below

2) Play arpeggio patterns as explained at the end of level 8.  Do each one at least ten times.

3) Play through "Golden Slumbers" shown below

"TV Chords"

The idea is to play these chords without thinking, almost like riding a bike.  Your goal is accuracy first, then speed. Work on memorizing the chords, then try playing them without looking at your left hand. Repeat these patterns at least ten times.  You're welcome to do this while watching TV! :)

"TV Chords"

The idea is to play these chords without thinking, almost like riding a bike.  Your goal is accuracy first, then speed. Work on memorizing the chords, then try playing them without looking at your left hand. Repeat each pattern at least ten times.  You're welcome to do this while watching TV! :)

"Boston" by Augustana

Verse 1:

C (2) C/B (2) Am (4) F (2) C (2)

In the light of the sun, is there anyone?

    F (2) G (2)

   Oh it has begun

C C/B Am F C

Oh dear you look so lost, eyes are red and tears are shed,

        F G

This world you must've crossed, you said

Chorus:

C (4) G (4) F (4) G (4)

You don't know me, you don't even care - oh yeah

C G F G

You don't know me, you don't wear my chains - oh yeah

C C/B | Am | F C | F G

Verse 2:

C C/B Am F C

Essential and appealed, carry all your thoughts

    F G

   Across an open field,

C C/B Am F C

When flowers gaze at you, they're not the only ones

       F G

Who cry when they see you, you said

(chorus)

Bridge/outro:

                             C G

She said I think I'll go to Boston, I think I'll start a new life,

                      F G

I think I'll start it over, where no one knows my name,

                      C G

I'll get out of California, I'm tired of the weather,

                   F G

I think I'll get a lover and fly him out to Spain

                            C G

Oh yeah I think I'll go to Boston, I think that I'm just tired

                  F G

I think I need a new town, to leave this all behind

                   C G

I think I need a sunrise; I'm tired of the sunset,

                         F G

I hear it's nice in the summer; some snow would be nice

C G F G

You don't know me, you don't even care - oh yeah
