In 2004, Carol Vernallis published a book called 'Experiencing Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context', explaining that the normal rules of continuity editing don't usually apply to music videos as they use far more edits.

Narrative

Carol Vernallis suggests the narrative in music videos usually show a visual response to the lyrics. However, Vernallis also suggests that music videos don't always have a complete narrative. Instead, the music video would be disjointed, showing some visual responses to the lyrics but not all.
