Strategy?

Facilitation?

It's all design to me.

Torfinn Almers

As a digital product designer and design strategist, I’ve worked a lot with innovation, leadership and communication. I help fill the gap between strategy and user-centered experiences.

Being value driven, I would like to continue making a real difference in people’s lives by working with relevant and global issues. Right now I’m working with improving ways of working, connecting strategy to experience and designing services in health-care.

Thanks for your time and attention!

All the best

Using design ops for change

Aleris is the largest privately owned specialist health-care provider in Sweden. It's a Scandinavian company with a very diverse composition of business models, markets and target groups.

Shortly after joining the new product team at Aleris, it became clear that the success of our mission was co-dependent on state of digitalisation in the larger organisation. I saw an opportunity to mitigate this risk by spending time helping to make Aleris digital channels in general become more user-centric – and the work on digital journey more strategic and operationally sound.

Setting goals, strategies and new ways of working, establishing editorial processes, moving from care-centric to user-centric communication, establishing a design system – these are some of the ways we are driving change through design processes and deliverables.

Self-service webapp for specialist health-care

My Aleris is the new digital platform for secure patient services at Aleris in Sweden. It integrates with public health-care IT to allow self-service and personalisation.

In 2021 I joined the newly established Engineering team as Service Designer. My job was to conceptualise and design a digital service that would enable patients self-service while not disrupting the work-flow for Aleris staff.

One challenge was discovering and designing for the many special business requirements, the organisational set-up and medical know-how of this domain in order to create a meaningful experience for patients – and staff as well as stakeholders in a digitally immature context.

Digitizing physical healthcare

Doctrin Flow is a product that helps health care professionals to digitalise the patient journey, integrating physical and digital healthcare.

I was Lead Product Designer from prototyping and product discovery through to Flow being launched as a certified platform (2017). The team grew from five to over 50 people and the process was very collaborative – with Lean and Agile as two important guiding principles.

After launch, I supported the in-house design team and headed up the work of designing a client facing self-service business configuration tool for Flow.

What if Bookbeat was for kids?

Around the time of Bookbeat being launched, the company wanted to explore how the service could attract a younger readership.

I was asked to be lead designer on this prototyping adventure. We created a business case, a number of concepts and launched a tested prototype in the AppStore in about six months.

We did user research with children aged 8-12, lots of interviews with different stakeholders, heaps of illustrations, flow charts and lots and lots of iterations in our small cross-functional team.

29k – videosharing is caring

How might our phones become tools for adult development? 29k is providing a context for deep, emotional video sharing with strangers.

This start-up, funded by the Norrsken Foundation, wants to change the world for the better by helping people to learn more about themselves. By sharing their reflections with strangers over video.

I helped 29k with their UX and design challenges regarding establishing a safe context for digital conversations, customer journey mapping, facilitating design sprints and prototyping with Sketch and Invision.

Redesign legacy and prototype future

IST is one of Scandinavia's leading providers of software tools for teachers and students since the 80's. A long legacy can make it harder to embrace innovation, which is why they started IST Labs.

I was asked to help with analysing the current user experience, mapping the different flows and identifying improvements to the UI and information design.

In parallell with this, I researched and prototyped new services for teachers and students, focusing on user centered workflows and mobile first.

Designing for new behavior in times of crisis

In 2015 Sweden was experiencing a surge in the arrivals of refugee children. The need for family homes was exploding, as well as the interest in providing a home. But the process of vetting family homes was extremely time consuming and had terrible success rates.

The problem was that applicants didn’t meet the necessary criteria, and very few of the applicants understood what was expected of them as a family home. We designed a self-service process that taught people what was expected by answering questions about their situation.

A secure e-mail service made sure private conversations between citizens and case workers could be fast and safe.

ECG Service Design

Zenicor is one of Europe’s leading companies regarding early diagnostics of stroke and heart arrythmia.

The product is a hand-held device that registers ECG and submits that data wirelessly. Specialists then access and analyse the data.

My task was to interview users to discover pains as well as opportunities for improvement. I used Value Proposition Design to map out and analyse the data from interviews and observations before prototyping. Task optimisation and user-centered workflow design were two key elements in the redesign.

The next version of their service is currently in development.

Growth pains

Dynamic Code offers smart end-to-end diagnostics for healthcare and science, as well as direct to consumers.

At Vinnovera we got the challenge of redesigning their e-commerce offering in order to increase conversation rates and customer satisfaction.

Progress on this task revealed larger internal issues related to changes in leadership and new priorities. As a result, we also prototyped a brand new B2B site to help with discussions about branding, market positioning and agreeing on new priorities.

Groundwork for cross-functional collaboration

KYH is a school for higher vocational training. At Vinnovera, we put together a three month design course introducing front-end students to tools and processes for creative thinking and doing.

In my role as head teacher for this class, I led the work with planning and designing the course, as well as teaching and coaching several student teams.

As part of the course, we also introduced and trained skills for collaboration in cross-functional teams. We then coached the teams through their practical design projects, helping them to deliver prototypes and present the process and reasoning behind their solutions.

Teaching

Leading as a system

How might we help three different agile leadership teams increase their shared empathy, psychological safety and establish common goals?

At SBAB my certified coach colleague and I designed and facilitated a series of workshops in group dynamics, conflict and change management.

The three teams converged from different parts of the company and wanted to work on the alignment and shared goals across their different teams.

We provided context, training and tools that allowed the leaders to workshop through their different perspectives and establish more trust and alignment.

Leadership & Coaching

Personal Coach

TRR is an organisation that helps people find new employment in Sweden.

As part of TRR’s digitalisation projects I was hired as an agile coach for a newly recruited project manager charged with aligning the work on the organisation’s different digital services.

Cultural Development

Vinnovera is a digital tech agency providing consultants and full project development.

When Vinnovera got a new CEO I was asked to design and facilitate a culture discovery process in order to reveal the needs and values present in the company.

The process resulted in the first iteration of a framework for working with deliberate culture design at Vinnovera. This framework then became a tool we continued to develop in the C-level team which I joined as as Head of Design.
