first, lets talk about data

NOW, Sensors!

sensor Journalism

Use sensors to build data sets.

Scientist have been doing this stuff for a loooong time. Their equipment is $$$

Arduino!

Very much DIY, garage band,  “Maker culture”

Info gathered is readily adapted to existing framework of data journalism,

project genesis

CAR class + Matt Waite

living downtown can get noisy

idea of a sound map slowly developed.

Justin helped flesh out ideas at hacks hackers-

Talked to everyone about it- A proposal was crafted and the Knight Foundation lapproved the idea for a Prototype Grant.

Initial idea:  arduino + sound sensor + cell phone card to text the data

our
technology:

First:

 arduino + sound sensor

then, + data loggers.

sound sample  every second.

renders voltage reading -

data reflects environment.

problems:

power hungry(ish)

manual sd card collection is :(

then, stumbled into world of jeenodes & moteinos

low power, wireless

these are engineered to use minimal power.
operation for year(+) on one battery
designed to work with radio transcievers
settled on moteino for our project-
uno was overkill for our needs
uses same chip in arduino uno
affordable!
comes assembled with radios
surface mount soldering is hard.
